(Pure Intent) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir asserts that as long as devotion is driven by worldly desires or the hope of a reward, such service remains fruitless. The Divine, or the true Self, is only attainable by one who has become entirely desireless and selfless.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a true warrior is not one who fights earthly battles, but one who struggles for liberation (Mukti). The genuine seeker is he who remains steadfast in the pursuit of Truth, even if he is shattered piece by piece, refusing to abandon the battlefield of spiritual awakening.

Meaning: Kabir describes his True Guru as a valiant warrior who relentlessly strikes the illusions of ignorance and ego with the arrows of divine knowledge. Kabir identifies himself as a devoted disciple who has taken a solemn vow of spiritual realization and refuses to retreat regardless of the intensity of the struggle.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that an ideal Guru is one who seeks nothing—neither material gain nor psychological validation—from the disciple. Conversely, the ideal disciple is one who offers everything—their ego, prejudices, and entire existence—to the Guru. This sacred bond is predicated on selfless love and absolute surrender.

Meaning: Kabir teaches that for an awakened soul, pleasure and pain are perceived as identical. Such a person is neither overwhelmed by joy nor consumed by grief. When one performs acts of kindness without any expectation of reward, a pure, selfless love emerges, freeing the heart from the burning agony of attachment and desire.

Meaning: Just as a tree never consumes its own fruit and a river never hoards its own water, a true seeker or saint embodies a physical form solely for the purpose of altruism. Their existence is dedicated to the selfless service of others and the pursuit of the ultimate truth for the collective good.

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker to surrender the mind entirely to the Divine, for only in that surrender does one become a true servant. Such a mind is so steadfast in its devotion that even if a saw were to run across its head, it would remain unwavering, refusing to seek any other refuge or succumb to duality.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one who serves with the expectation of a reward, constantly calculating their gains day and night, is not a true devotee. Genuine service is unconditional; if there is a desire for profit or a specific return, it is not spiritual devotion but a mere commercial transaction.

Meaning: In this couplet, Kabir describes a paradoxical state where a free soul appears bound by worldly ties, while one entangled in bondage becomes liberated through spiritual awakening. He asserts that the true devotee is one who performs their duties in the world but renounces the ego of being the 'doer,' thereby attaining a state of divine servitude.

Meaning: The state of a person who is free from all worldly desires is pure and pristine, for their only longing is for the Divine presence. Those who crave pilgrimages to holy sites are still bound by desire; the true devotee is one who has completely surrendered their ego to the Divine.
