Famous Kabir Dohe on Detachment —

(Living in the world but remaining detached from worldly attachments is true Vairagya.)

Detachment — vairagya — is Kabir's answer to a world that teaches clutching. Sant Kabir Das did not ask his followers to flee into caves; he asked them to live in the world the way the lotus lives in water — surrounded by it, nourished by it, but never stained by it. His dohas on vairagya describe the art of holding life lightly.

Kabir's detachment is not indifference. It is the freedom of a person who enjoys what comes, serves what is needed, and lets go without grief when things pass — because everything passes. The detached heart loves more deeply, not less, because it does not strangle what it loves with possessiveness.

Read these couplets to understand why Kabir called vairagya the secret of living joyfully inside a changing world.
