(Universal Humanism) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir prays to the Divine for only as much sustenance as is necessary to support his family. His plea is for a balanced life where his own basic needs are met, and he possesses enough surplus to ensure that no seeker or needy soul who visits his door departs hungry.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that countless souls have spent their entire lives immersed in the study of voluminous scriptures and academic texts, yet true wisdom remains elusive to them. He posits that genuine scholarship is not found in the rote memorization of texts, but in the realization and practice of the two-and-a-half letters of 'Love' (Prem), which unlocks the ultimate truth of existence.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the only essential requirement for spiritual realization is the essence of love. External appearances, rituals, or outward identities are irrelevant. Whether one resides within the domesticity of a home or retreats into the solitude of a forest, the location is secondary to the internal state of devotion.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the flesh of a chicken, a deer, or a cow is essentially the same. Humans, driven by selective perception, choose specific creatures to consume based on arbitrary distinctions. Those who persist in this cycle of violence and ignorance, consuming the life-force of others, inevitably descend into spiritual darkness and suffer the consequences of their cruelty.

Meaning: Kabir declares his presence in the marketplace of the world, standing as a witness who wishes well for every living soul. He maintains a state of profound equilibrium where he is neither bound by the attachments of friendship nor consumed by the fires of enmity, embodying a universal benevolence.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that inquiring about the caste or social lineage of a realized soul is a futile exercise; instead, one should seek the depth of their wisdom. Just as the value of a sword lies in its edge and strength rather than the ornate scabbard that holds it, the true worth of a human being is determined by their inner realization and spiritual insight, not by the circumstances of their birth or social standing.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that every soul who has entered this world must inevitably depart, regardless of whether they were a powerful monarch, a destitute pauper, or a wandering ascetic. While death is the universal equalizer, the aftermath is determined by one's spiritual alignment; some ascend to the throne of liberation, while others remain shackled by the chains of their own attachments and karmic debts.

Meaning: Kabir emphasizes the profound contrast between superficial physical beauty and internal spiritual purity. He asserts that a soul devoted to Truth and righteousness, even if they appear physically soiled, dark, or unattractive to the world, possesses an inner radiance that far outweighs the value of millions of conventionally beautiful faces.

Meaning: Kabir questions the very notion of 'showing mercy' to others or labeling someone as 'cruel.' He asserts that every living being, from the smallest ant to the most majestic elephant, is a manifestation of the same Divine Creator. Since all life originates from a single source, the distinction between the giver of mercy and the receiver is an illusion.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that human existence and desires are deeply planted in a toxic soil of attachment and illusion. To uproot this deep-seated connection requires a hundredfold effort, yet the individual remains reluctant to abandon the worldly facade, blinded by the ignorance of their own true nature.
