(Cycle of Birth) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir addresses the oblivious human soul, calling them 'foolish' for forgetting the inevitability of death. He questions why one is surprised by the end, asserting that the physical body is destined to dissolve into the earth, just as a pinch of salt vanishes completely when kneaded into flour, losing its individual form to become one with the whole.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one who fails to realize the true essence of the Formless Divine (Ram) during their lifetime will eventually face the inevitable strike of time and the agony of death. Just as clay, after being shaped and broken by a potter, returns to the earth and is trampled upon, the soul of an ignorant human, tethered to the physical body, will suffer the consequences of its spiritual negligence upon the dissolution of the flesh.

Meaning: Kabir proclaims that the soul has recognized its appointed time and is now journeying toward its beloved Divine. He calls out to the individual soul, urging it to realize that its own turn has come to shed ignorance and draw near to the Eternal Truth that has always been present yet remained unseen.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that human life is fleeting and brief, while the accumulation of ego and material pride is immense. Ultimately, on the path toward the inevitable end, the king, the pauper, and the sultan all stand in the same queue; no social distinction or worldly rank holds any value in the face of death.

Meaning: Kabir describes the inevitable reality of death and its spiritual aftermath. He observes that in the end, the bones of the deceased burn, the wood used for the pyre burns, and even the one performing the last rites is consumed by the fire of grief and the realization of mortality. When everything is reduced to ash, the soul cries out in desperation, wondering whom to call upon or where to seek refuge now that all earthly ties are severed.

Meaning: Kabir observes that in the funeral pyre, bones burn like dry wood and hair vanishes like scorched grass. Witnessing the entire world consumed by this inevitable fire of mortality, Kabir is overcome with a profound spiritual melancholy, mourning how humanity clings to a transient existence while ignoring its own certain dissolution.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a day will inevitably come when every human being must face an absolute separation from all loved ones, material possessions, and the physical body itself. Whether one is a powerful king, a nobleman, a wealthy merchant, or a destitute pauper, death acts as the ultimate equalizer. Thus, one must awaken spiritually and abandon ego before time runs out.

Meaning: O seeker, immerse yourself in true devotion and spiritual discipline, for only then shall you attain the divine vision. Recognize that this human birth is a rare opportunity, a fleeting window of consciousness that does not recur frequently; do not squander it in vanity.

Meaning: The entire universe emerged through the influence of time and shall inevitably dissolve back into it. Everything subject to time is transient; time relentlessly erases all existence, consuming every form until only the timeless truth remains.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a human being enters and exits this world in absolute solitude; no companion is permanent. He suggests that if one can transcend the fear of death (Yama) through spiritual awakening, they rise above the cycle of worldly attachments and animosities. Once the ego is annihilated, the concept of an 'enemy' ceases to exist, as the seeker realizes the unity of all existence.
