(Meaning of Life) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir asks the human soul about the true purpose of its earthly incarnation, noting that the individual remains slumbering under the blanket of ignorance. He urgently calls upon the heedless soul to awaken its consciousness and recognize its true divine identity before the window of opportunity closes forever.

Meaning: The physical body is a heavy burden, yet the mind is like a crow that can fly millions of leagues in an instant. This consciousness oscillates wildly, diving into the unfathomable depths of spiritual longing one moment and expanding into the infinite expanse of the cosmic sky the next, while the physical frame remains anchored.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the Divine or Self-realization is a priceless treasure available to all, yet there is a lack of 'buyers'—those with the discernment to seek it. A human being who lacks purposeful spiritual action and discipline remains adrift, wandering aimlessly through the illusions of existence.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the fundamental substance is one and the same, yet the process of shaping it differs. From the same single piece of iron, one may forge a protective armor (bakhtar) or a lethal sword (shamsher). The distinction lies not in the material itself, but in the intent and the craft of the smith.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the practice of spiritual discourse, the singing of divine praises, and the pursuit of truth are the only viable vessels to cross the treacherous ocean of worldly existence. In this illusory world, there is no other effective means of liberation from the cycle of birth and death than spiritual awakening and constant remembrance of the Divine.

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker to diligently preserve the jewel of spiritual knowledge, for the material world is as fragile and transient as clay. He observes that humans arrive and depart from this existence, only to find that the world is tasteless and void of lasting substance without the light of true wisdom.

Meaning: Kabir observes that people sing devotional hymns and feel a superficial joy, claiming to experience spiritual bliss. However, they remain ignorant of the true essence and the actual nature of the Divine Name. By clinging to the mere ritual of chanting without internal realization, they have unwittingly placed a noose around their own necks, mistaking outward performance for inner liberation.

Meaning: Kabir questions the purpose of our existence: what have we actually achieved during our time on earth? He warns that upon returning to the source, we will have no answer. We failed to master the material world and failed to realize the spiritual realm, spending our entire existence wandering in illusion and wasting the precious opportunity of human birth.

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker to cease wandering in external rituals and pilgrimages, returning instead to the 'home' of the inner self to receive true initiation. He describes human existence as a high-stakes gamble where the physical body and ego are the stakes; the ultimate question is whether one will drown in the illusions of the world or emerge liberated through spiritual awakening.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that those who rely solely on the external measurement of time—counting months, days, or years through ritualistic observance—cannot overcome the fear of death. The true devotee is one who transcends the linear constraints of time to merge with the Eternal Divine, thereby gaining the spiritual audacity to challenge Yama, the Lord of Death, recognizing the immortal nature of the Atman.
