(Cycle of Birth) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir asserts that human existence is fleeting and time slips away moment by moment. As long as an individual remains entangled in the chaotic webs of worldly attachments and illusory desires, they remain estranged from the ultimate truth. Eventually, the drum of death sounds, signaling the end of the physical journey, proving that only the realization of the Eternal Self is enduring.

Meaning: Observing the grinding mill, Kabir weeps in profound realization. He posits that just as every grain passing between the two heavy millstones is crushed into powder, leaving nothing whole, so too does the relentless cycle of worldly existence and time grind down the human ego and physical form, leaving no one untouched or intact in the face of mortality.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that when the moment of departure arrives, all external rituals and clamorous displays become futile. Human existence is trapped in a relentless cycle of birth and death, mirroring the mindless movement of ants in a narrow channel, oblivious to the purpose of this endless recurrence.

Meaning: Kabir addresses a leaf of a tree, urging it to listen to a fundamental truth. He explains that in this worldly household, the only constant law is transience: for every arrival, there is an inevitable departure, mirroring the cycle of birth and death.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the soul bound by the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether—is condemned to the endless cycle of birth and rebirth. Only the seeker who masters these five elemental forces and transcends the limitations of the physical body can strike the target of ultimate liberation and merge with the Eternal Truth.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that regardless of one's outward purity, status, or intellectual brilliance—symbolized by the sacred conch and the lotus—a life devoid of true devotion (Bhakti) remains spiritually empty. Without this inner connection to the Divine, the soul remains trapped in the cycle of suffering and the grip of inevitable spiritual decay.

Meaning: Kabir observes a profound paradox: while the physical body is fragile and inevitably succumbs to death, the human mind and its insatiable cravings persist. The body undergoes a cycle of decay and rebirth, yet the deep-seated desires and attachments remain alive, tethering the soul to the cycle of suffering and preventing true spiritual liberation.

Meaning: Kabir warns against the cultivation of pride and arrogance. He asserts that whoever harbors the ego—the sense of a separate, superior 'I'—remains trapped in the grueling cycle of eighty-four thousand births and deaths, failing to achieve ultimate liberation.

Meaning: Whoever speaks ill of a true saint or an enlightened soul invites profound distress and spiritual crisis into their own life. Such a person remains trapped in the agonizing cycle of birth and death, wandering through existential suffering, for by disparaging the embodiment of truth, they close the doors to their own liberation and ultimate salvation.

Meaning: This couplet emphasizes the immutable law of karma and the necessity of spiritual guidance. Kabir asserts that every individual must experience the consequences of their own actions. Without the devotion and guidance of a True Guru (Satguru), a soul remains trapped in the cycle of ignorance, enduring suffering across countless lifetimes.
