Kabir saw the worship of idols as a worship of the hand-made, not the Infinite. Sant Kabir Das asked the devotee who bathed a stone idol how a stone could know his prayers, and his dohas against idolatry turn the seeker away from temples and images toward the formless God who dwells within.
Kabir's condemnation of idolatry is not contempt for the common devotee but a summons to a higher worship. The dohas here insist that the Divine cannot be captured in stone, wood, or paint, and that the true image of God is the pure heart in which God chooses to live.
Read these couplets to understand why Kabir rejected idol worship so completely and how his insistence on the formless shaped the nirguna tradition he founded.
