Kabir reserved some of his sharpest verses for the professional holy men of his age — the pundits who claimed to own scripture and the mullahs who claimed to own heaven. Sant Kabir Das rejected the idea that any human being could stand between another person and God, and his dohas on anti-clericalism strip religious authority of its borrowed power.
The dohas in this category mock the learned man who cannot see his own faults, the preacher who sells blessings, and the scholar who recites sacred texts without living them. Kabir's message is that truth needs no middleman: God speaks directly to the heart that is willing to listen.
Read these couplets to understand why Kabir, a layman with no formal education, dared to stand against the most powerful religious institutions of his time.
