(Simple Living) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir prays to the Divine for only as much sustenance as is necessary to support his family. His plea is for a balanced life where his own basic needs are met, and he possesses enough surplus to ensure that no seeker or needy soul who visits his door departs hungry.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the act of begging or pleading for sustenance and favors is equivalent to spiritual death. He advises against seeking alms or handouts, suggesting that physical death is preferable to the erosion of one's soul and dignity through dependency. This teaching from the Satguru emphasizes that true liberation comes from relying on inner strength and Divine Grace rather than the fickle mercy of other humans.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one who is spiritually hungry cannot be satiated by the words of others or external rituals. True liberation and the 'perfect union' (Puran Jog) are achieved only when an individual crafts their own internal vessel of consciousness and tastes the truth through direct, personal experience.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that just as a river does not diminish its volume by flowing and giving its water to the earth, the true wealth of a human being—spiritual and material—does not decrease through selfless giving. He urges the seeker to observe this cosmic law through their own eyes rather than relying on hearsay.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the individual who does not cling to the knots of worldly attachments or the emotional bonds of kinship and desire is truly liberated. He suggests that the dust from the feet of such a realized soul—one who has transcended the pull of earthly love and domesticity—is sacred, as it represents the pinnacle of detachment and spiritual awakening.

Meaning: Kabir advises against craving material prosperity, worldly success, or supernatural powers. Instead, he urges the seeker to pray for the constant presence and guidance of a true saint or an enlightened soul, as their company is the only catalyst for genuine spiritual awakening and liberation from the ego.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the true rosary is one of the mind, not merely an external ornament or a worldly costume. If the simple act of wearing beads around the neck could lead to the realization of the Divine, then the marketplaces where these beads are sold would be the most crowded centers of enlightenment.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a simple, peaceful hut is far superior to a grand, bustling city filled with vanity and noise. Similarly, a small piece of fragrant sandalwood is more valuable than a massive acacia tree, which offers nothing but thorns and harshness, symbolizing that inner quality outweighs outward scale.

Meaning: Kabir explains that the true hallmarks of a saint or a realized soul are humility, the absence of ego, an equitable disposition toward all beings, and a gentle nature. Only when these qualities are deeply ingrained does one embody the essence of Truth and achieve genuine spiritual awakening.

Meaning: Kabir observes that humans often spend their lives clinging to the crumbs of others' generosity or external dependencies, which is a form of spiritual bondage. True wealth is internal; once a person recognizes their own divine essence, they cease to be a beggar at the doors of the world and find absolute liberation.
