(Universal Humanism) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir observes that people often form attachments based on selfish motives or transactional needs; however, once the motive is fulfilled or disappears, the affection vanishes. He asserts that without genuine, selfless love, there is no foundation for true trust or lasting devotion in any relationship.

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker to cultivate a companionship with the Divine that is so saturated with spiritual essence that it transforms their entire being. He uses the metaphor of a dyer: just as a cloth must be repeatedly dipped into boiling dyes and endure the harshness of the process to achieve a permanent, vibrant hue, a seeker must endure the trials of spiritual discipline and the shedding of the ego to be permanently colored by the Truth, never abandoning the path despite the inherent struggle.

Meaning: Just as the water lily dwells in the water and the moon resides in the vast sky, the Divine or Truth manifests to every individual according to their own inner disposition, faith, and emotional longing. Truth is omnipresent, but it is our own perception that defines how we experience it.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that in this transient world, there is no kinsman as true as the Satguru, nor a benefactor as selfless as a realized saint. There is no well-wisher more profound than the Divine (Hari), and no lineage or caste more noble than that of the devotees of the Divine.

Meaning: Kabir reflects on his journeys across diverse lands, concluding that human birth is a rare and auspicious opportunity. He observes a profound paradox: those who appear to be experiencing worldly happiness are, in spiritual terms, suffering from a severe famine, as they remain oblivious to the divine purpose of their existence.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a true seeker or saint is one whose existence is dedicated to the welfare of others. Their compassion is likened to a sudden, refreshing rain that falls indiscriminately. By applying the 'Paras' (the philosopher's stone) of their realized consciousness, they extinguish the fires of suffering and mental anguish in others.

Meaning: A true seeker is one who perceives the Divine residing within every living being and therefore ensures that no creature suffers because of their actions. Such a person remains steadfast in their own spiritual conviction and inner discipline, for this unwavering adherence to truth is the hallmark of a genuine saint.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that true coolness is found neither in chilled water nor in ice. Genuine serenity and coolness reside within the heart of a saint who is immersed in the love of the Divine (Ram) and whose inner fire of ego has been completely extinguished.

Meaning: Some approach with love and devotion, while others come burdened by lack and emptiness. However, a true saint or enlightened soul nourishes both equally; they do not differentiate between the abundance of the giver or the void of the seeker, for their compassion is universal and unconditional.

Meaning: Just as a tree never consumes its own fruit and a river never hoards its own water, a true seeker or saint embodies a physical form solely for the purpose of altruism. Their existence is dedicated to the selfless service of others and the pursuit of the ultimate truth for the collective good.
