(Religious Hypocrisy) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir observes that some individuals adorn themselves in the attire of a lion to project power and authority, yet their actual conduct remains timid and cowardly like a sheep. Their speech is characterized by the cunning and opportunistic nature of a jackal. Ultimately, this spiritual and moral hypocrisy leads to their downfall, where time and death consume them utterly, mirroring a dog devouring carrion.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that true devotion cannot be attained simply through external rituals like wearing prayer beads or applying a sectarian mark on the forehead. While one may adopt the outward appearance of a devotee, if the inner consciousness remains enslaved to worldly desires and social conformity, the essence of spirituality remains elusive.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that wearing prayer beads and applying a sectarian mark on the forehead are merely outward costumes or superficial displays. True devotion to the Divine is an entirely different internal experience. He critiques those who adorn themselves with religious symbols while remaining enslaved to their five senses and internal impurities.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that those who practice devotion in fragments or through superficial displays falsely claim the status of a spiritual heir. In reality, those blinded by Maya are merely pretenders, and countless souls remain lost in the cycle of existence due to this illusory approach to spirituality.

Meaning: Kabir observes that while the prayer beads rotate in the hand and the tongue chants mantras within the mouth, the mind continues to wander in all four directions. He asserts that such external ritualism is not true remembrance (Sumiran), as genuine devotion requires the alignment of the mind, not just the body.

Meaning: Kabir critiques the hypocrite who commits grand thefts or injustices yet offers a trivial donation, like a needle, to project an image of piety. Such a person, blinded by the ego of their own perceived righteousness, believes this superficial act of charity will elevate them spiritually, unaware that they remain profoundly distant from the actual path of liberation.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a critic or slanderer, even if they bathe in sixty-eight sacred pilgrimages and scrub their physical body clean, cannot remove the internal filth of the soul. Even if such a person were to traverse fifty-six crore earths in search of purity, the habit of maligning others ensures they remain trapped in a state of spiritual misery and darkness.

Meaning: Kabir questions the futility of idol worship, noting that humans carve temples and install massive stone idols. He argues that if the stone idol breaks, it remains merely a piece of lifeless rock. Therefore, he asks how a lifeless, inert object can possibly lead a sentient soul toward spiritual liberation.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that humans seek liberation from the cycle of worldly existence by worshipping stone idols. He compares this act to someone attempting to cross a river by carrying a heavy stone upon their head; instead of reaching the other shore, the weight of the stone ensures they sink into the depths.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the world has exhausted itself in the worship of stone and water, meeting death without ever realizing the Truth. Only those who discern the fundamental difference between external ritualism and the internal realization of the Divine are able to cross the ocean of worldly existence.
