Meaning: Kabir questions those who dwell in the passive hope of external salvation, waiting for others to lead them to truth while their life slips away. He compares this reliance on others to a foolish trust in a tanner (kasaay) who might cheat a man of his clay; the seeker loses their essence and time by outsourcing their spiritual responsibility to intermediaries.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that human beings have squandered the precious gift of human birth through the pursuit of greed and worldly desires. The accumulation of sins has eroded the merit of their virtuous deeds. While they may now attempt a spiritual practice, it remains superficial and incomplete, as the clinging ego and blood-like attachments continue to obstruct the path to true liberation.

Meaning: Kabir describes the human existence as a fragile boat crafted from desires and worldly gains, yet heavily laden with the crushing weight of ego and material attachments. Paradoxically, the seeker carries a bundle of poison—representing anger, greed, and ignorance—upon their head, while desperately longing to cross the turbulent ocean of worldly existence to reach the shore of liberation.

Meaning: This couplet speaks of the fire of separation and spiritual transmutation. Kabir suggests that the wood of longing is damp, causing it to sputter and smoke, creating immense distress. Liberation from this suffering is achieved only when the wood is completely consumed by fire, symbolizing the total annihilation of the ego.

Meaning: A soul longing in separation has prepared the lamp of devotion and prays for a vision of the Divine (Ram). She questions, 'If You grant me Your vision only after I have died, what purpose does Your arrival serve then?' She demands a living, present realization of the Truth here and now.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the 'Shabd' (the Primordial Sound or Word) is the origin of all existence, and within this vibration, the soul is embedded. He laments the irony of human existence: people cling to the empty basket of external rituals and material pursuits, while the divine nectar of spiritual realization is available right beside them, yet remains untouched.

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker to maintain a constant remembrance of the 'Primal Word' (the Eternal Sound or Divine Vibration) that existed before creation. In the final reckoning, only this internal spiritual realization will bear fruit, while all external arguments, intellectual debates, and worldly disputes will prove futile.

Meaning: Without the inner Word or spiritual vibration, consciousness remains blind and directionless. Until the seeker finds the gateway to this primordial Sound, they wander endlessly in the illusions of the material world, suffering repeated failures and spiritual disorientation.

Meaning: The power of the 'Shabad' (Divine Word) is so potent that it can shatter the ego and unlock the hidden secrets of existence. Those who have deeply contemplated and realized the essence of this Word find that their spiritual struggles and worldly burdens are effortlessly resolved.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that while the world is flooded with countless words, scriptures, and discourses, one must churn through them to extract the 'essence' or the ultimate truth. He warns that a life spent without realizing this core spiritual essence is a life wasted, devoid of true purpose.
