कबीर के दोहे (Kabir's Couplets)

अर्थ: यह संसार काजल की उस छोटी सी डिबिया के समान है जिसमें पूरी मानवता डूबी हुई है। कबीर उस महान साधक या पुरुष की सराहना करते हैं जो इस मायावी संसार में प्रवेश तो करता है, लेकिन इसमें लिप्त हुए बिना, अपनी चेतना को मुक्त रखते हुए इससे बाहर निकलने में सफल हो जाता है।

Meaning: This world is like a small pot of kohl (black soot), in which the entire universe is drowned. Kabir offers his deepest reverence to that rare soul who enters this worldly existence but manages to emerge from it unscathed, transcending the illusions of materiality without becoming trapped by them.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि मृत्यु (काल) हमारे सिर पर खड़ी है, इसलिए हे मित्र! अब जाग जाओ। जिस व्यक्ति का घर रास्ते में स्थित है, वह कैसे निश्चिंत होकर सो सकता है? यह दोहा हमें जीवन की नश्वरता और आध्यात्मिक जागरूकता की तात्कालिकता की याद दिलाता है।

Meaning: Kabir warns that Time or Death (Kaal) stands poised over our heads; therefore, O friend, awaken from your slumber. One whose house lies directly in the path of a passing storm or a predator cannot sleep in peace. It is a call to recognize the fragility of existence and the urgency of spiritual awakening.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि मनुष्य के भीतर अहंकार और वासना रूपी एक काला सर्प छिपा है, जो धीरे-धीरे पूरे जीवन और चेतना को निगल जाता है। इस संसार के मोह-माया के जाल में फंसकर अधिकांश लोग नष्ट हो जाते हैं। केवल वे कुछ विरले लोग ही इस विनाश से बच पाते हैं जो विवेकपूर्ण चिंतन के साथ उस निराकार राम (परम सत्य) की शरण लेते हैं।

Meaning: Kabir warns that a 'black serpent'—symbolizing ego, desire, and ignorance—resides within the human body, slowly consuming the essence of one's existence and spiritual vitality. Most of humanity is devoured by the illusions of the material world. Only a rare few manage to escape this internal predation by meditating upon and seeking the formless Divine (Ram) with deep awareness and discernment.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि इस संसार की रीति और गति बिल्कुल वैसी ही है जैसे कि भेड़ों के झुंड की होती है। जिस प्रकार यदि एक भेड़ किसी गड्ढे या खाई में गिर जाती है, तो उसके पीछे-पीछे पूरा झुंड बिना सोचे-समझे उसी गड्ढे में कूद पड़ता है, ठीक वैसे ही मनुष्य भी बिना विवेक के दूसरों का अंधानुकरण करते हुए विनाश की ओर अग्रसर होते हैं।

Meaning: Kabir observes that the movement of the world mirrors the behavior of a flock of sheep. Just as the entire flock blindly plunges into a pit if a single sheep falls in, human beings tend to follow the crowd blindly, drifting toward spiritual or moral ruin simply because others are doing so, devoid of individual discernment.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि केवल ऊँचे कुल या प्रतिष्ठित परिवार में जन्म लेने से कोई व्यक्ति महान नहीं हो जाता। यदि व्यक्ति के भीतर विवेक, नैतिकता और आध्यात्मिक बुद्धि का अभाव है, तो उसका उच्च कुल निरर्थक है। यह ठीक वैसा ही है जैसे कोई फूल दिखने में बहुत सुंदर और आकर्षक हो, लेकिन अंततः वह मुरझाकर गिर जाता है और उसकी सुंदरता व्यर्थ हो जाती है।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that being born into a high-born or prestigious lineage does not inherently make a person great. If an individual lacks wisdom, discernment, and moral integrity, their noble ancestry is meaningless. He compares such a person to a flower that blooms with outward brilliance but soon withers and falls, proving its superficial beauty to be an illusion.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी पूछते हैं कि हे दुर्बल हिरणी, तू इन हरे-भरे तालाबों और घास के मैदानों में क्यों चर रही है? तू यह नहीं देख रही कि शिकारी की दृष्टि केवल तुझ पर है, और वह अपने बाणों से कई हिरणों का शिकार कर चुका है। यह चेतावनी है कि सांसारिक सुख क्षणभंगुर हैं और मृत्यु अटल है।

Meaning: Kabir asks the frail doe, why do you graze peacefully in these lush green meadows? Are you unaware that the hunter's eye is fixed upon you, and many of your kin have already fallen to his arrows? This is a poignant warning that worldly pleasures are fleeting and the inevitability of death is the only certainty.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि जब साक्षात् मार्गदर्शन करने वाले कृष्ण पांडवों के साथ थे, तो उन्हें हिमालय की कठिन यात्राओं या बाहरी खोजों की आवश्यकता नहीं थी। इसी प्रकार, यदि किसी साधारण मनुष्य को 'पारस' (गुरु या आत्म-ज्ञान) मिल जाए, तो वह अपनी तुच्छता और अभावों को त्याग कर स्वर्ण के समान मूल्यवान और शुद्ध बन जाता है।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that when the divine guide, Krishna, was physically and spiritually present with the Pandavas, there was no need for them to wander the arduous heights of the Himalayas in search of truth. Similarly, if a common human—like base iron—encounters the 'Paras' (the touchstone of a true Guru or Self-realization), they are instantly transformed into gold, rendering all previous struggles and deficiencies irrelevant.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि जब व्यक्ति के पास समय और अवसर था, तब उसने सत्य और परमात्मा की पहचान नहीं की। अब जब जीवन के अंत समय की कठिनाइयाँ और मृत्यु रूपी कांटे उसे चारों ओर से घेर चुके हैं, तब जागने या पश्चाताप करने से कोई लाभ नहीं होगा।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one failed to recognize the Divine Truth when the opportunity was ripe and the path was clear. Now that the thorns of old age, suffering, and inevitable death have surrounded the soul, awakening or repentance is futile, as the window for effortless liberation has closed.

अर्थ: यह संसार और शरीर लकड़ी की एक कोठी के समान है, जिसमें समय की अग्नि निरंतर जल रही है। जो केवल किताबी ज्ञान और पांडित्य के अहंकार में डूबे रहे, वे अंततः खाली हाथ रह गए, जबकि सरल हृदय वाले भक्त (साकत) अपनी सहज भक्ति से इस विनाशकारी चक्र से मुक्त हो गए।

Meaning: This physical world and the human body are like a storehouse made of wood, which is being consumed by the relentless fire of time. Those who relied solely on scholarly pride and rote learning found their bags empty at the end, whereas the simple devotees, through their innate love, were liberated from this burning cycle.

अर्थ: यदि खेत उपजाऊ है और बीज भी उत्तम है, तो फसल निश्चित रूप से समृद्ध होगी। यदि फिर भी पौधा सूखा या कमजोर रह जाता है, तो दोष बीज या बोने वाले का नहीं, बल्कि उस मिट्टी के गुणों का है जिसमें वह बीज रोपा गया था। यह दोहा बाहरी संसाधनों के बजाय आंतरिक पात्रता और आधार की महत्ता को दर्शाता है।

Meaning: If the field is fertile and the seed is of superior quality, the harvest will inevitably flourish. If the plant remains withered or stunted despite these factors, the fault lies not with the seed or the sower, but with the inherent qualities of the soil. This verse emphasizes that spiritual growth depends more on the internal receptivity of the soul than on external rituals.
