कबीर के दोहे (Kabir's Couplets)

अर्थ: यह दोहा उस गहन और अडिग आध्यात्मिक प्रेम की बात करता है जहाँ साधक सत्य की खोज में इतना मग्न है कि वह कष्टों की परवाह नहीं करता। जैसे चकोर पक्षी चंद्रमा के प्रति अपने प्रेम में इतना पागल है कि वह जलते हुए अंगारों को भी चबा लेता है, वैसे ही एक सच्चा प्रेमी ईश्वर के विरह और मार्ग की कठिनाइयों को सहते हुए भी अपना मार्ग नहीं छोड़ता।

Meaning: This couplet speaks of an intense and unwavering spiritual love where the seeker is so absorbed in the pursuit of Truth that they become indifferent to suffering. Just as the mythical Chakora bird, in its obsessive love for the moon, would chew upon burning embers, a true devotee endures the agony of separation and the hardships of the path without ever abandoning their divine quest.

Meaning: Kabir observes that people merely chant scriptures and recite stories without contemplating their inner essence. Knowledge acquired without direct experience is hollow. Just as iron remains iron unless touched by the mythical philosopher's stone (Paras), a human remains trapped in ignorance unless the 'Paras' of spiritual realization transforms their consciousness.

अर्थ: जब शिष्य गुरु के अनुशासन और उनकी आध्यात्मिक चेतावनी से भयभीत होता है, तब उसकी शारीरिक और मानसिक अशुद्धियाँ धुलने लगती हैं। यदि मन में कुमति और बुरे विचार बसे हों, तो वह व्यक्ति केवल बाहरी दिखावे और शब्दों के लालच में फँसा रहता है, जबकि वास्तविक रूपांतरण आंतरिक समर्पण से आता है।

Meaning: When a seeker trembles before the spiritual discipline and stern warnings of the Guru, the physical and mental impurities of the body begin to be cleansed. However, if the mind remains inhabited by distorted intellect and egoic desires, the seeker merely chases the superficial allure of words and rhetoric, failing to achieve true internal transformation.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि यदि शिष्य स्वयं सीखने के प्रति उदासीन है या उसके भीतर पात्रता का अभाव है, तो गुरु की सारी विद्या और मार्गदर्शन व्यर्थ हो जाते हैं। जैसे एक बांसुरी में छेद न हों या वह सही से न बनी हो, तो फूँक मारने पर भी संगीत नहीं निकलता, वैसे ही अयोग्य शिष्य पर गुरु के ज्ञान का कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that if a disciple is lacking in readiness or is fundamentally flawed in their intent, the guru's efforts become futile. Just as blowing into a bamboo pipe that is not properly crafted yields no music, the potent arrows of the guru's spiritual words cannot pierce the heart of a disciple who is closed or unprepared.

अर्थ: जो व्यक्ति अपने गुरु के मार्गदर्शन को त्याग देता है और आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान (शब्द) से विमुख हो जाता है, वह विनाश की ओर अग्रसर होता है। जब अहंकार ज्ञान पर हावी हो जाता है, तो समय या मृत्यु उसे खींच ले जाती है, और दुनिया की कोई भी शक्ति उसे पतन से नहीं बचा सकती।

Meaning: One who discards the guidance of the Guru and turns away from the sacred Word (Shabd) invites spiritual ruin. When a seeker abandons the path of truth for the illusions of ego, time and death inevitably drag them toward oblivion, and no earthly or divine power can shield them from this consequence.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि गुरु को एक कुशल जौहरी या दर्पण-साफ करने वाले (सिकलीगर) के समान होना चाहिए, जो शिष्य के मन की गंदगी को रगड़कर साफ कर दे। गुरु अपने ज्ञान रूपी शब्दों के माध्यम से मन के ऊपर जमी अज्ञानता की परतों को छीलकर हटा देता है, जिससे अंततः हृदय एक स्वच्छ दर्पण बन जाता है जिसमें आत्मा का वास्तविक स्वरूप प्रतिबिंबित होता है।

Meaning: Kabir observes that many abandon their homes and families to become ascetics, seeking enlightenment through rigorous penance in remote forests. He compares this to a person who exhausts themselves beating a berry tree in hopes of fruit, while the birds—who simply dwell there—effortlessly pick and eat the berries. External renunciation is not the path to truth.

अर्थ: कबीर यहाँ उन योगियों पर कटाक्ष कर रहे हैं जो बाहरी साधनाओं और कठिन शारीरिक तपस्या में लीन रहते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि गोरखनाथ जैसे योगियों ने योग का रस चखा, लेकिन अंततः उनकी देह को जलाया नहीं गया या वह नष्ट हो गई। शरीर का मांस गलकर मिट्टी में मिल गया, और अंत में केवल एक खाली ढांचा या राख ही शेष रही, जिससे यह स्पष्ट होता है कि केवल शारीरिक तप से मोक्ष संभव नहीं है।

The flesh dissolves and merges back into the earth, leaving behind nothing but a hollow shell or dust, emphasizing that mere physical mastery or asceticism cannot bypass the ultimate law of mortality or secure spiritual liberation.
