(Living in Present) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir addresses the restless mind, reminding it that everything in existence unfolds in its own natural time. Just as a gardener may pour a hundred pots of water onto a plant, the fruit will only appear when the appropriate season arrives. Patience is the essential catalyst for spiritual and material fruition.

Meaning: Kabir emphasizes the uncertainty and urgency of time. He asserts that tasks deferred to tomorrow should be completed today, and those planned for today should be executed this very moment. Since life is ephemeral and the 'pralaya' (dissolution or death) can occur in an instant, delaying spiritual or worldly duties leads to a state where action becomes impossible.

Meaning: Kabir emphasizes the fleeting nature of human existence, noting how days slip away unnoticed. He asserts that without genuine spiritual longing and love, all efforts remain sterile. Just as seeds sown in dry earth cannot sprout without the descent of rain, spiritual growth and liberation are impossible without the 'rain' of divine grace and heartfelt devotion.

Meaning: Kabir advises the seeker to accumulate that spiritual wealth which remains viable beyond the threshold of death. When the soul departs the physical vessel and ascends, the bundles of worldly identity, caste, and social status vanish; only the essence of inner truth and realized consciousness accompanies the traveler.

Meaning: Kabir warns that the human consciousness is often asleep while the mind is distracted by external illusions. Like a deaf sentinel guarding a field while birds devour the crop, we allow our spiritual essence to be consumed by worldly desires. He urges immediate awakening, for if we do not realize the truth now, the majority of our existence will be wasted in ignorance.

Meaning: Kabir warns that time is an unstoppable force and the moments of life are slipping away. One must not procrastinate in the pursuit of spiritual awakening and self-realization, for the cycle of time and death is inevitable, and this precious opportunity for liberation may not return.

Meaning: Kabir suggests that if even the blink of an eye feels like a distant eternity, how can a fragile human like me claim control over time? We remain ignorant of what will transpire in the final stages of existence, as the hour of departure is unpredictable and sudden.

Meaning: Kabir urges that if one seeks spiritual awakening or liberation, it must be pursued with immediate urgency. Relying solely on hearsay, inherited traditions, or second-hand scriptures is futile, as such blind adherence to external rituals only serves to bind the soul to the eternal cycle of birth and death.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one must secure their spiritual wealth and virtues within their own grasp—meaning through conscious experience and realization—while they still possess a physical body. When the final market of life arrives at the moment of death, there will be no worldly merchant or mediator to trade for you; you can only carry what you have truly internalized and realized within yourself.

Meaning: Kabir warns that waiting for the 'perfect moment' or delaying spiritual awakening is a futile endeavor. If one continues to procrastinate by counting fortnights and months, the precious window of human life will slip away. He emphasizes that delaying the quest for Truth is equivalent to inviting one's own spiritual demise.
