The relationship between the soul and the body is one of the great subjects of Kabir's poetry. Sant Kabir Das describes the body as a house the soul rents, a garment the soul wears, and a guest-house on a journey that continues beyond death. His dohas on soul and body teach the reader to identify with the immortal self, not the mortal frame.
Kabir's teaching here is both comforting and demanding: the body will age, sicken, and fall, but the soul is unborn and deathless. The dohas in this category free the reader from the fear of death and from the vanity that worships the body's beauty and strength.
Read these couplets to understand Kabir's vision of the soul and why he called the body the first teacher of impermanence.
