अर्थ: बाहरी स्वच्छता और शारीरिक स्नान का कोई मूल्य नहीं है यदि हृदय के भीतर की अशुद्धियाँ, जैसे क्रोध, लोभ और अहंकार, समाप्त नहीं होते। जिस प्रकार मछली निरंतर जल में रहती है, फिर भी उसकी अपनी एक विशिष्ट गंध (बास) नहीं जाती, उसी प्रकार केवल जल से शरीर धोने से मन की गंदगी नहीं मिटती।

Meaning: External cleansing and physical bathing are futile if the impurities of the heart—such as anger, greed, and ego—remain untouched. Just as a fish lives perpetually in water yet retains its inherent fishy smell, merely washing the body cannot cleanse the deep-seated stains of the mind.

अर्थ: कबीर उन लोगों पर कटाक्ष कर रहे हैं जो बाहरी दिखावे और कर्मकांडों में फंसे हैं। वे कहते हैं कि व्यक्ति सालिगराम की पूजा करता है लेकिन उसके मन में माया और सांसारिक मोह बना रहता है। वह काले वस्त्र पहनकर वैरागी होने का ढोंग करता है, जबकि उसका आंतरिक स्वभाव अभी भी अशुद्ध है और वह केवल एक 'सफेद' या पवित्र नाम की पहचान चाहता है।

Meaning: Kabir critiques those trapped in external rituals and superficial displays of piety. He observes that a person may worship the Saligram stone, yet remains deeply attached to Maya (worldly illusion). By wearing the black cloak of a renunciant, they simulate detachment, while their internal state remains unchanged, seeking only the social prestige of a 'pure' or holy reputation.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि मनुष्य ने अपनी चेतना को अज्ञानता और अहंकार के अंधेरे कमरे में बंद कर लिया है। उसने बाहरी कर्मकांडों और शास्त्रवादी ज्ञान के दरवाजों को बंद कर लिया है, जिससे वह सत्य को नहीं देख पा रहा। वह पत्थर की मूर्तियों और बाहरी दुनिया के मोह में इतना खो गया है कि उसने वास्तविक आत्म-ज्ञान का मार्ग भुला दिया है और केवल पंडितों या बाहरी गुरुओं के बताए कठिन, भ्रमित रास्तों पर चल रहा है।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that humanity has imprisoned its consciousness within a dark chamber of ignorance and ego. By shutting the doors of genuine intuition in favor of rigid rituals and scriptural dogma, the seeker has become blind. In the obsession with stone idols and the material world, the essence of the Earth and the Self is forgotten, leaving the seeker to wander aimlessly on the convoluted paths prescribed by orthodox scholars.

अर्थ: जो व्यक्ति अहंकार का त्याग कर विनम्रतापूर्वक संतों के चरणों में स्वयं को समर्पित कर देता है, वह संसार रूपी सागर को पार कर जाता है। इसके विपरीत, जो लोग अपने उच्च कुल या जाति के अहंकार में डूबे रहते हैं, वे आध्यात्मिक पतन का शिकार होते हैं और मोक्ष से वंचित रह जाते हैं।

Meaning: Those who humble themselves and surrender at the feet of the enlightened, shedding all pride, successfully cross the turbulent ocean of worldly existence. Conversely, those blinded by the arrogance of their high caste or noble lineage find themselves drowning in the depths of ignorance, unable to achieve spiritual liberation.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि यह कलियुग का समय है जहाँ संसार आध्यात्मिक अंधापन और पाखंड से भरा है। यहाँ कोई भी सत्य शब्द या ईश्वरीय ज्ञान को सुनने के लिए तैयार नहीं है। जब कोई व्यक्ति दूसरों के वास्तविक कल्याण की बात करता है, तो वे उसे समझने के बजाय उसका शत्रु बन जाते हैं।

Meaning: Kabir observes that in the age of Kali Yuga, the world is blinded by ignorance and spiritual darkness. No one is willing to listen to the Truth or the Divine Word. When a seeker attempts to guide others toward their own ultimate well-being and spiritual liberation, those people react with hostility and become enemies instead of allies.

अर्थ: यह संसार और शरीर लकड़ी की एक कोठी के समान है, जिसमें समय की अग्नि निरंतर जल रही है। जो केवल किताबी ज्ञान और पांडित्य के अहंकार में डूबे रहे, वे अंततः खाली हाथ रह गए, जबकि सरल हृदय वाले भक्त (साकत) अपनी सहज भक्ति से इस विनाशकारी चक्र से मुक्त हो गए।

Meaning: This physical world and the human body are like a storehouse made of wood, which is being consumed by the relentless fire of time. Those who relied solely on scholarly pride and rote learning found their bags empty at the end, whereas the simple devotees, through their innate love, were liberated from this burning cycle.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि जो लोग केवल बाहरी दिखावे के लिए तीर्थयात्राओं पर जाते हैं और पवित्र नदियों में स्नान करते हैं, वे आध्यात्मिक रूप से मृत हैं। वे केवल शारीरिक शुद्धि करते हैं, लेकिन उनके भीतर का अहंकार और अज्ञान बना रहता है। अंततः, वे अपनी अज्ञानता के कारण पछताते हैं क्योंकि उन्होंने वास्तविक आंतरिक ईश्वर को खोजने के बजाय केवल कर्मकांडों को प्राथमिकता दी।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that those who visit pilgrimage sites and bathe in holy rivers merely for outward show are spiritually dead. Ultimately, they are left in a state of profound regret, realizing too late that they prioritized empty rituals over the genuine pursuit of the indwelling Divine.

अर्थ: मनुष्य स्वयं को महान समझने और अहंकार में डूबा रहता है, जहाँ उसके शरीर के प्रत्येक रोम में गर्व व्याप्त है। किंतु कबीर कहते हैं कि बिना सद्गुरु के ज्ञान और कृपा के, चाहे कोई किसी भी जाति या वर्ण का हो, वह आध्यात्मिक रूप से अज्ञानी और निम्न ही रहता है।

Meaning: Man wanders in the delusion of greatness, with arrogance permeating every pore of his being. However, Kabir asserts that without the transformative grace and realization provided by a true spiritual teacher, individuals of all four social castes remain spiritually ignorant and devoid of true worth.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि केवल ऊंचे कुल या प्रतिष्ठित परिवार में जन्म लेने से कोई व्यक्ति महान नहीं हो जाता। जिस प्रकार चंदन का पेड़ अपनी सुगंध के कारण जाना जाता है, लेकिन जब आग लगती है, तो वह यह नहीं देखता कि वह चंदन है या कोई साधारण लकड़ी; वह सबको समान रूप से जला देता है। इसी तरह, कर्मों के बिना कुल का गौरव व्यर्थ है।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that being born into a high-caste or prestigious lineage does not inherently grant a person spiritual or moral superiority. He uses the metaphor of sandalwood: while it is prized for its fragrance, when consumed by fire, the flames do not distinguish between the precious sandalwood and ordinary wood. Both are reduced to ash, proving that lineage is irrelevant in the face of ultimate truth and action.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी पूछते हैं कि राजमहल की विलासी स्त्रियाँ उस साधारण पानी भरने वाली स्त्री (पनिहारी) की निंदा क्यों करती हैं और उसे तुच्छ क्यों मानती हैं? वह पनिहारी अपने पति के प्रेम में अपनी माँग सजाती है और निरंतर ईश्वर (राम) का स्मरण करती रहती है, जो उसे वास्तविक आध्यात्मिक समृद्धि प्रदान करता है।

Meaning: Kabir questions why the opulent women of the royal court despise and belittle the simple water-carrier. While the royal women possess worldly luxury, the water-carrier adorns her life with the love of her beloved and spends her every waking moment in the remembrance of the Divine, achieving a spiritual richness that gold cannot buy.
