Meaning: Kabir asserts that pain and suffering are universal experiences, identical for every human being regardless of their creed, caste, or social standing. The foolish fail to recognize this shared vulnerability. He ironically questions why, if the mere act of physical sacrifice or decapitation could grant entry into paradise (Bhisht), people would not simply do so, highlighting that spiritual liberation is not achieved through physical martyrdom but through the dissolution of the ego.

Meaning: A hen speaks to the butcher, observing her imminent slaughter. She warns him that while he holds the power of life and death now, the Ultimate Lord (Sahab) will eventually demand an account of his actions. In that divine reckoning, the butcher will find himself in a crisis of consequence.

Meaning: Kabir observes that as long as the Qazi (religious cleric) was immersed in worldly desires and ego, he perceived a duality between the soul and the Divine. However, upon ascending the pulpit of the mosque, he proclaims the unity of God. Kabir challenges this hypocrisy, asking why the truth of oneness is only preached from a position of power while lived experience remains fragmented.

Meaning: Kabir observes that the religious authorities—the Qazis and Mullahs—are bewildered, drifting aimlessly in the current of worldly attachments. They pursue social prestige and material gain rather than spiritual truth. True liberation occurs only when the poverty of the heart (spiritual emptiness) is removed and one sincerely surrenders to the Divine, grasping the hand of the Eternal Truth.

Meaning: This couplet strikes at the heart of external hypocrisy and superficial piety. Kabir asserts that people may alter their outward appearance or adopt religious masks to seem holy, yet their hearts remain cluttered with ego and malice. Until one ruthlessly eradicates the root of 'Aham' (the ego), the true divine countenance and the ultimate reality of the Creator remain obscured.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a person accumulates wealth through deceit and unethical means, yet publicly claims it to be 'halal' or righteous. He warns that when the Supreme Being demands an account of one's deeds, the facade of piety will crumble, leaving the soul in a state of utter desperation and ruin.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that when one commits atrocities driven by power and arrogance, they must eventually answer to the Divine. The oppressor, who stands as a murderer at the door of the Creator, believing themselves to be the master of existence, ultimately finds themselves consumed by the consequences of their own cruelty and the silence of divine justice.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a true saint or spiritual guide is one who possesses the profound capacity to feel the pain of others. He posits that anyone who remains indifferent to the suffering of fellow beings is essentially a spiritual outsider or 'kaafir', regardless of their outward religious adherence, for their heart remains closed to the ultimate truth of compassion.

Meaning: Kabir observes that the lotus dwells within the water and the moon resides in the vast sky. Though they occupy vastly different realms, the core truth is that whatever one truly loves or belongs to, one is inevitably drawn toward. It is a reflection of the soul's innate attraction to its own true nature.

Meaning: Kabir suggests that while the Guru may reside in the sacred city of Varanasi and the disciple dwells on the banks of the river, the spiritual wisdom imparted is never forgotten if the disciple possesses the inner merit and spiritual capacity to absorb it. True knowledge becomes an inseparable part of one's being.
