Famous Kabir Dohe on Critique of Ritualism —

(Difficult rituals and ceremonies performed without love and understanding are useless.)

Kabir's critique of ritualism is one of the defining features of his poetry. Sant Kabir Das saw people bathing in holy rivers while their minds stayed dirty, fasting while their tongues stayed sharp, and visiting temples while their hearts stayed far from God. His dohas on ritualism expose the gap between outward practice and inward life.

Kabir does not condemn all ritual; he condemns ritual that has become a substitute for transformation. The dohas here insist that God is not impressed by ceremonies but by character, and that the truest worship is a life of truth, love, and compassion lived every day.

Read these couplets to understand why Kabir stripped religion down to its essential core and why his critique of empty ritual still speaks to every age.
