Meaning: Kabir describes a state of consciousness where the ego has been completely annihilated. He suggests that his mind has 'died' and, in doing so, has become like a 'ghost'—meaning it no longer possesses personal desires or worldly attachments. Having shed the identity of the self, the soul now follows the Divine with the singular, unwavering devotion of a child following a father.

Meaning: One who walks the path of life with conscious deliberation and mindful awareness, surrendering to the guidance of a true spiritual teacher, attains a state of ultimate fulfillment. Such an individual remains untouched by the fires of lust and anger, eventually transcending the cyclical grip of time and the fear of death.

Meaning: This couplet describes the grueling spiritual state where a seeker is caught between the ease of natural enlightenment (Sahaj) and the turbulence of worldly existence. The seeker neither truly lives in the material sense nor dies into the divine union; they remain in a state of perpetual tension where the ego is flickering but not yet extinguished.

Meaning: Kabir warns against trusting the apparent stillness of a corpse. Just as a dead body might unexpectedly rise as a ghost to destroy the living flesh, latent desires and the dormant ego—which seem dead—can suddenly awaken to destroy the spiritual progress and stability of the seeker.

Meaning: In this couplet, Kabir describes the inevitability and fierce nature of Time (Death). He suggests that the warriors of death stand poised all around, sounding their horns of warning. When the mountain-like force of Time arrives, it forcibly drags the individual away from the center of their worldly palace of comforts, regardless of their status or strength.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that human existence is a precarious state of vulnerability. Youth is likened to a timid hare, relentlessly pursued by the hound of lust, while Death remains a constant hunter lying in wait. When a person is trapped between these two formidable adversaries, where can they possibly find true peace, safety, or a genuine friend in the material world?

Meaning: Upon seeing the flowing stream, the stagnant wells laugh in mockery. Kabir declares that he has embarked upon the path of spiritual liberation and flow, while those trapped in the rigidity of ritual and ego remain stationary, merely pretending to move or clinging to their outdated, stagnant beliefs.

Meaning: The entire universe emerged through the influence of time and shall inevitably dissolve back into it. Everything subject to time is transient; time relentlessly erases all existence, consuming every form until only the timeless truth remains.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a human being enters and exits this world in absolute solitude; no companion is permanent. He suggests that if one can transcend the fear of death (Yama) through spiritual awakening, they rise above the cycle of worldly attachments and animosities. Once the ego is annihilated, the concept of an 'enemy' ceases to exist, as the seeker realizes the unity of all existence.

Meaning: Kabir proclaims that the sun which rises must inevitably set, and the flower that blooms is destined to wither. The wall coated in lime will eventually crumble, and every being born into this world must eventually face death. It is a stark distillation of the transient nature of all material existence.
