कबीर के दोहे (Kabir's Couplets)

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि जो व्यक्ति बिना सही मार्गदर्शक या ज्ञान के आध्यात्मिक घाट (लक्ष्य) को भूल गया है और बाहरी दिखावे या वेशभूषा में उलझ गया है, वह संसार की भीड़ में अपनी असली पहचान खो चुका है। ऐसा व्यक्ति बाहरी आडंबरों में इतना लीन है कि वह अपने भीतर स्थित उस परम तत्व को पहचानने में पूरी तरह असमर्थ है।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one who forgets the spiritual destination (the ghat) due to a lack of true guidance and becomes obsessed with outward appearances and ritualistic attire is utterly lost. Such a person is so entangled in the superficial noise of the world that they fail to recognize the divine essence residing within themselves.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि मनुष्य जीवन में एक छोटे से बीज (इच्छा) को बोता है, लेकिन समय के साथ वह इच्छाओं का एक विशाल जंगल बन जाता है। जब मृत्यु (काल) का समय आता है, तो यह सारा मोह और सांसारिक संचय व्यर्थ हो जाता है और अंततः सब कुछ समाप्त हो जाता है।

Meaning: Kabir explains that a human plants a single small seed of desire, which eventually grows into a vast forest of endless cravings. However, when the inevitable shadow of Death (Kaal) arrives, all these accumulated attachments and worldly pursuits vanish, leaving the soul to face the ultimate void.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी इस दोहे के माध्यम से यह संदेश देते हैं कि मृत्यु के पश्चात शरीर को चंदन या सुगंधित पदार्थों से सजाने का कोई लाभ नहीं है, क्योंकि अंततः सब कुछ मिट्टी में मिल जाना है। वे चेतावनी देते हैं कि जब तक मनुष्य जीवित है, उसे मानसिक या शारीरिक रूप से प्रताड़ित न करें, क्योंकि मृत्यु तो निश्चित है ही।

Meaning: Kabir emphasizes that adorning a dead body with sandalwood or perfumes is futile, as everything eventually decays into dust. He urges us not to kill or torment a living soul through hatred or violence, reminding us that death is an inevitable destination for all beings.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि चंदन के पेड़ पर जहरीले सांप लिपटे रहते हैं, फिर भी चंदन अपनी शीतलता और सुगंध नहीं छोड़ता। वह सांपों के विष से अप्रभावित रहता है। इसी प्रकार, जब मनुष्य अपने भीतर 'राम' (परम तत्व) का वास करा लेता है, तो बाहरी दुनिया का विष और नकारात्मकता उसके आंतरिक अमृत को नष्ट नहीं कर पाती।

Meaning: Kabir observes that poisonous snakes coil around the sandalwood tree, yet the tree remains unaffected, continuing to emanate its cooling fragrance. Similarly, when a seeker anchors themselves in the divine essence of 'Ram', the poisons of the external world—hatred, greed, and malice—cannot penetrate or diminish the internal nectar of spiritual bliss.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि जिस प्रकार चकोर पक्षी चंद्रमा के प्रति अपने अटूट विश्वास और प्रेम में इतना लीन रहता है कि वह अपनी सुध-बुध खो देता है और अंततः विनाश का शिकार हो जाता है, उसी प्रकार मनुष्य भी सांसारिक मोह और बाहरी सहारे के भ्रम में अपनी वास्तविक आध्यात्मिक शक्ति को भूलकर केवल बाहरी प्रतीकों पर निर्भर रहता है, जिससे उसका पतन निश्चित है।

Meaning: Kabir illustrates the tragedy of the Chakor bird, which is so consumed by its blind devotion and reliance on the moon that it ignores its own survival, eventually being devoured by predators. He warns that humans similarly perish when they place their faith in external idols or worldly illusions instead of seeking the eternal truth within themselves.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि जब वे एक चलती हुई चक्की को देखते हैं, तो उनकी आँखों में आँसू आ जाते हैं। वे देखते हैं कि चक्की के दो पाटों के बीच जो भी अनाज आता है, वह पूरी तरह पीस जाता है और कोई भी दाना साबुत नहीं बचता। यह संसार की नश्वरता का प्रतीक है।

Meaning: Kabir observes a grinding mill in motion and is moved to tears. He notes that between the two heavy grinding stones, every single grain of corn is crushed into powder; not a single grain remains whole. This serves as a poignant metaphor for the inevitable dissolution of the physical body and the transient nature of human existence.

अर्थ: साधक आध्यात्मिक यात्रा पर निकला था, लेकिन लक्ष्य से कुछ ही दूरी पर उसके पैर थक गए और वह बीच रास्ते में ही रुक गया। अब जब वह मंजिल के इतने करीब था, फिर भी वह वहां नहीं पहुँच पाया; इसमें किसका दोष है—उसकी अपनी कमजोरी का या मार्ग की कठिनाई का?

Meaning: A seeker set out on a spiritual journey, but just a few miles short of the destination, their feet grew weary and they collapsed. Having come so far, yet failing to reach the final goal, Kabir asks: whose fault is it? Is it the fault of the path, or the seeker's own lack of endurance?

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि चार चोर अपने पैरों की जूतियाँ उतारकर चुपके से आगे बढ़ रहे हैं। उन्होंने चारों द्वारों की कुंडियाँ (किवाड़) तोड़ दी हैं। अब हे विद्वान व्यक्ति, तू विचार कर कि ये चोर कौन हैं और उन्होंने क्या चुराया है। यह दोहा बाहरी चोरी नहीं, बल्कि आंतरिक आध्यात्मिक चोरी की ओर संकेत करता है।

Meaning: Kabir describes four thieves who have removed their footwear to move silently and have broken the locks of four doors. He challenges the learned scholar to contemplate the identity of these thieves. This is not a literal crime but a profound metaphor for the internal theft of consciousness and the erosion of spiritual boundaries.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि जब चार महीने तक घनघोर वर्षा होती है और जल की प्रचुरता हो जाती है, तब आत्मा प्रेम और भक्ति के रस में पूरी तरह डूब जाती है। इस अवस्था में साधक को किसी बाहरी कवच या सुरक्षा (बखतरी) की आवश्यकता नहीं रहती, क्योंकि वह ईश्वरीय प्रेम के कारण इतना अभेद्य हो जाता है कि सांसारिक दुखों और आलोचनाओं का कोई भी तीर उसे विचलित नहीं कर पाता।

Meaning: Kabir describes a state where for four months, the clouds of divine grace pour down incessantly, flooding the soul with the waters of spiritual love. In this state of total immersion, the seeker no longer needs an external armor of ego or defense; they become so spiritually fortified by love that no arrow of worldly suffering, criticism, or desire can pierce their inner peace.

अर्थ: इस दोहे में कबीर एक गहरे आध्यात्मिक विरोधाभास को प्रस्तुत करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि जब कोई व्यक्ति उस परम सत्य या दिव्य स्वरूप (चौगोड़ा) का साक्षात्कार करता है, तो शिकारी (व्याध), जो कि मृत्यु और मोह का प्रतीक है, डरकर भाग जाता है। सबसे बड़ा आश्चर्य यह है कि वह जो मृत्यु के भय में था, अंततः उस काल (समय/मृत्यु) को ही निगल गया, अर्थात उसने मृत्यु पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली।

Meaning: In this couplet, Kabir presents a profound spiritual paradox. He suggests that when one beholds the Divine Form or the Ultimate Truth (Chaugoda), the hunter (Vyadha)—symbolizing death, attachment, and the ego—flees in terror. The ultimate wonder, addressed to the seekers, is that the one who was once prey to time has now consumed Time itself, effectively achieving victory over death and the cycle of rebirth.
