Famous Kabir Dohe on Mortality —

Meaning: Kabir observes that the benefactor has departed, leaving behind those who cling to the remnants of greed, much like flies swarming over filth. These individuals failed to comprehend the essence of generosity and the spiritual grace of giving; instead, they remain strong only in their stubbornness and their will to fight for material possession.

Meaning: Kabir suggests that when a seeker abandons their ego, worldly attachments, and false identities, they become like a toothless animal—utterly humble and stripped of the power to bite or resist. In this state of complete surrender and vulnerability, liberation itself yearns for the seeker, wandering the sacred groves of Vrindavan, searching for the soul that has finally become empty.

Meaning: This world and the physical body are like a piece of wood infested by the termite of Time. No matter how many precautions or efforts one makes, the termite of decay relentlessly consumes everything. Death and Time reside within the very core of our existence, yet the secret of this impermanence remains hidden from the oblivious human mind.

Meaning: Kabir critiques those practitioners of Hatha Yoga, exemplified by Gorakhnath, who immerse themselves in rigorous physical austerities. He observes that despite their devotion to yogic disciplines, the physical body inevitably succumbs to decay. The flesh dissolves and merges back into the earth, leaving behind nothing but a hollow shell or dust, emphasizing that mere physical mastery or asceticism cannot bypass the ultimate law of mortality or secure spiritual liberation.

Meaning: Kabir explains that a human plants a single small seed of desire, which eventually grows into a vast forest of endless cravings. However, when the inevitable shadow of Death (Kaal) arrives, all these accumulated attachments and worldly pursuits vanish, leaving the soul to face the ultimate void.

Meaning: Kabir observes a grinding mill in motion and is moved to tears. He notes that between the two heavy grinding stones, every single grain of corn is crushed into powder; not a single grain remains whole. This serves as a poignant metaphor for the inevitable dissolution of the physical body and the transient nature of human existence.

Meaning: In this couplet, Kabir presents a profound spiritual paradox. He suggests that when one beholds the Divine Form or the Ultimate Truth (Chaugoda), the hunter (Vyadha)—symbolizing death, attachment, and the ego—flees in terror. The ultimate wonder, addressed to the seekers, is that the one who was once prey to time has now consumed Time itself, effectively achieving victory over death and the cycle of rebirth.

Meaning: Kabir explains that human existence is a relentless cycle of childhood, youth, old age, and inevitable death. The passage of time is so swift and subtle that life vanishes like a tiny bubble bursting in an instant; death (Yama) is an ever-present shadow, waiting to claim the soul at any moment.

Meaning: The human soul remains ignorant of the true nature of life and death, blinded by the illusions of the material world. Lost in this spiritual darkness, the individual fails to find the gateway to liberation, leading to a cycle of endless births and deaths characterized by profound regret and suffering.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that if one truly recognizes the nature of their own soul and existence, they will uncover the ultimate essence and purpose of life. The soul is likened to a rare guest who visits only once; if this singular opportunity for realization is squandered, it shall not return a second time.
