कबीर के दोहे (Kabir's Couplets)

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि मैं अपने चंचल और अनियंत्रित मन को वश में करने का प्रयास करता हूँ, उसे अपने हृदय के भीतर ही सीमित रखने की कोशिश करता हूँ। जब भी यह मन मुझे धोखा देकर पीछे से भागने की कोशिश करता है या सांसारिक वासनाओं की ओर मुड़ता है, मैं इसे आध्यात्मिक अनुशासन के अंकुश से नियंत्रित कर पुनः सत्य की ओर मोड़ता हूँ।

Meaning: Kabir expresses the struggle to subdue the restless and erratic mind, attempting to confine its wanderings within the sanctuary of the heart. Whenever the mind attempts to escape through the back door of distraction or drifts toward worldly illusions, he employs the 'ankus'—the goad of spiritual discipline—to pull it back and redirect it toward the Eternal Truth.

अर्थ: अपनी इच्छाओं और सांसारिक कामनाओं का त्याग करें, क्योंकि सब कुछ आपकी इच्छा के अनुसार नहीं होता। जिस प्रकार पानी में घी नहीं निकल सकता, उसी प्रकार असंभव की चाह करना व्यर्थ है। यदि प्रकृति के नियमों के विरुद्ध कुछ संभव होता, तो कोई भी रूखा भोजन नहीं करता।

Meaning: Relinquish your stubborn desires and the insistence that the world bend to your will, for not everything occurs as planned. Just as oil cannot be extracted from water, certain desires are contrary to the laws of existence. If the impossible were possible, no one would ever endure the hardship of dry, tasteless bread.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि हमने इस संसार में आकर क्या किया? जब हम वापस जाएंगे, तो क्या जवाब देंगे? हम न तो इस भौतिक दुनिया के सत्य को समझ पाए और न ही उस परलौकिक आध्यात्मिक सत्य को प्राप्त कर सके; हम केवल भ्रम और अज्ञानता में भटकते रहे और अपना वास्तविक जीवन गँवा दिया।

Meaning: Kabir questions the purpose of our existence: what have we actually achieved during our time on earth? He warns that upon returning to the source, we will have no answer. We failed to master the material world and failed to realize the spiritual realm, spending our entire existence wandering in illusion and wasting the precious opportunity of human birth.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि मनुष्य का ध्यान बाहरी दुनिया में है, जबकि उसकी आंतरिक चेतना सोई हुई है। जैसे एक बहरा रखवाला खेत की रखवाली करता है और पक्षी फसल खा जाते हैं, वैसे ही अज्ञानता के कारण हमारा जीवन व्यर्थ बीत रहा है। यदि समय रहते जागृत नहीं हुए, तो जीवन का अधिकांश हिस्सा नष्ट हो जाएगा।

Meaning: Kabir warns that the human consciousness is often asleep while the mind is distracted by external illusions. Like a deaf sentinel guarding a field while birds devour the crop, we allow our spiritual essence to be consumed by worldly desires. He urges immediate awakening, for if we do not realize the truth now, the majority of our existence will be wasted in ignorance.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी पूछते हैं कि मनुष्य अपनी नश्वरता को भूलकर किस बात का अहंकार करता है? समय (काल) यह चेतावनी देता है कि मृत्यु का कोई निश्चित समय या स्थान नहीं है; वह तुम्हें कहीं भी, किसी भी क्षण, इस संसार से दूर ले जा सकती है।

Meaning: Kabir asks what grounds a human has for pride given their inherent mortality. Time (Kaal) warns that death is unpredictable and indiscriminate; it can strike anywhere and at any moment, abruptly transporting the soul away from this earthly realm.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि अपने मन और चित्त को पूरी तरह से ईश्वर की भक्ति में लगा दो, क्योंकि यह सबसे मूल्यवान सौदा है। इस आध्यात्मिक व्यापार में खरीदार स्वयं परमात्मा (राजा राम) हैं, और उनके सिवा कोई अन्य व्यक्ति इस गहरे सत्य के करीब नहीं आ सकता।

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker to invest their entire consciousness and heart into the divine, treating it as the most precious transaction of existence. He asserts that the only true Buyer in this spiritual marketplace is the Supreme Being (Raja Ram), and no worldly entity can approach the proximity of this ultimate truth.

अर्थ: मनुष्य बाहरी दिखावे, रेशमी वस्त्रों और विलासिता के सुखों में डूबा रहता है, यह सोचकर कि यही जीवन की सार्थकता है। परंतु कबीर कहते हैं कि बिना ईश्वर के नाम रूपी नाव के, यह भौतिक आडंबर आत्मा को पार नहीं लगा सकते और अंततः जीव कर्मों के बंधन में बंधकर मृत्यु के पश्चात कष्ट पाता है।

Meaning: Humans immerse themselves in external displays of status, wearing fine clothes and indulging in luxuries like betel leaf and nuts, believing these define their existence. However, Kabir asserts that without the 'boat' of Divine Remembrance (Hari's name), these material vanities cannot ferry the soul across the ocean of existence, leaving the soul bound to the consequences of its karmic debts.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि मनुष्य को केवल उस निराकार राम (परमात्मा) की शरण और आश्रय को नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए। जिस प्रकार एक मजबूत लोहे की छड़ या औजार, चाहे वह कितनी ही भीषण गर्मी या प्रहारों के बीच हो, अपनी आंतरिक मजबूती के कारण चोट सह लेता है, वैसे ही परमात्मा का आश्रय लेने वाला व्यक्ति संसार के दुखों और कष्टों को धैर्यपूर्वक सहने में सक्षम होता है।

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker never to abandon the shelter and refuge of the Formless Ram (the Divine). He illustrates this with the metaphor of iron: just as a piece of iron remains resilient and endures countless heavy blows because of its inherent strength, a soul anchored in the Divine remains unshaken and steadfast despite the relentless onslaught of worldly suffering and adversity.

अर्थ: यह संसार और इसमें व्याप्त मोह-माया एक बहुत बड़ी विपत्ति है। यदि तुम सक्षम हो, तो यहाँ से भागकर मुक्त हो जाओ। हे सखी, तुम कब तक इस आंतरिक अग्नि को रुई की परतों में छिपाकर रखोगी? अंततः यह विनाशकारी होगी।

Meaning: This worldly existence and the attachment within it are a profound calamity. If you have the strength, escape from this entrapment. O friend, for how long will you keep this internal fire wrapped in cotton? Eventually, the hidden flame will consume everything.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि सच्ची माला मन की होनी चाहिए, न कि केवल बाहरी दिखावे या सांसारिक वेशभूषा की। यदि केवल गले में माला पहनने से ईश्वर की प्राप्ति हो जाती, तो बाजार में बिकने वाले मोतियों और मालाओं की दुकानों पर सबसे अधिक संत होते।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the true rosary is one of the mind, not merely an external ornament or a worldly costume. If the simple act of wearing beads around the neck could lead to the realization of the Divine, then the marketplaces where these beads are sold would be the most crowded centers of enlightenment.
