अर्थ: यह दोहा अहंकार के विनाशकारी परिणामों का वर्णन करता है। कबीर कहते हैं कि जब एक हाथी (कुंजर) अपने अहंकार में अंधा हो जाता है, तो वह अनजाने में अपने ही सिर पर भारी बोझ उठा लेता है। अंततः, वह अहंकार उसे मृत्यु के द्वार तक ले जाता है, जहाँ वह एक लोहार की तरह अपने ही कर्मों की चोट सहता है, जैसे लोहार लोहे को पीटकर आकार देता है।

Meaning: This couplet describes the destructive consequences of ego. Kabir suggests that when an elephant—a symbol of power—becomes blinded by pride, it inadvertently carries a crushing burden upon its own head. Ultimately, this arrogance leads the soul to the gates of death, where it is hammered by the consequences of its own actions, much like a blacksmith beats raw iron into shape.

Meaning: One who is truly great never proclaims their own greatness nor speaks words of vanity. Just as a priceless diamond never opens its mouth to announce that its value is worth millions, true spiritual excellence resides in silence and profound humility, remaining unseen yet intrinsically invaluable.

अर्थ: केवल बाहरी आकार, पद, या धन में बड़ा होना व्यर्थ है यदि आप दूसरों के काम नहीं आते। जिस प्रकार खजूर का पेड़ बहुत ऊंचा होता है, लेकिन वह न तो राहगीर को छाया देता है और न ही उसके फल आसानी से उपलब्ध होते हैं, उसी प्रकार वह व्यक्ति निरर्थक है जिसका बड़प्पन दूसरों के लिए लाभकारी नहीं है।

Meaning: Mere greatness in stature, rank, or wealth is meaningless if it serves no purpose for others. Just as the date palm grows toweringly high yet offers no shade to the weary traveler and keeps its fruit far beyond reach, a person's perceived superiority is void if it does not translate into compassion or utility for fellow beings.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि मनुष्य को अपने जीवनकाल में ही अहंकार और बाहरी दिखावे की इन दो गंदी धाराओं को धो डालना चाहिए। यदि व्यक्ति केवल मान-सम्मान और बड़प्पन की लालसा में रहता है, तो वह अपनी आत्मा की मूल पवित्रता और वास्तविक स्वरूप को खो देता है।

Meaning: Worldly honor and the pride of status are merely transient waves, characteristic of social interaction. In contrast, true devotion lies in humility and a sense of spiritual poverty, which is a divine gift bestowed by the True Guru to liberate the soul.

However, the act of relinquishing the ego, the craving for social status and prestige, and the poison of jealousy is profoundly difficult and rare, as these subtle internal vices are deeply ingrained in the human psyche.

The date palm tree is toweringly tall, yet it offers no shade for birds to rest and its fruits remain distant and inaccessible.
