Famous Kabir Dohe on Guru —

Meaning: Kabir reminds us that the physical body is transient and destined for decay. If you wish to anchor your consciousness to a permanent spiritual foundation, engage in the selfless service of the realized souls and contemplate the virtues of the Guru, thereby dissolving the ego to attain liberation.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that those immersed in worldly grandeur, royal fanfare, and external celebrations—symbolized by the sounding of drums and auspicious songs—are merely chasing illusions. Without the grace and guidance of the one true spiritual teacher, the precious opportunity of human birth is squandered and lost.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the human body is like an unbaked clay pot—fragile, porous, and transient—constantly assaulted by the blows of worldly suffering from every direction. Without the stabilizing grace of the Guru's wisdom and the resonance of the Divine Name, the individual is destined for spiritual dissolution and total fragmentation upon the inevitable arrival of death.

Meaning: Kabir observes that a man may carve a statue of an ox, but if he forgets the horns and the tail, the creation remains incomplete. Similarly, without the guidance of a true spiritual teacher, a person's outward displays of piety, status, or masculinity are meaningless; such vanity is a hollow shell devoid of true essence.

Meaning: This couplet warns that worldly achievements, high status, and outward displays of grandeur are ultimately hollow and futile. Without the guidance of a true spiritual master and the remembrance of the Divine Name, the soul faces immense suffering and disorientation upon the arrival of death.

Meaning: Kabir observes that humans spend immense effort on external appearances—wearing pristine white clothes and indulging in luxuries like betel leaf and nuts. However, he warns that without the devotion to a Guru and true spiritual guidance, these superficial adornments are meaningless, leaving the soul bound by worldly attachments and destined for the tribulations of the afterlife.

Meaning: Human existence has been reduced to the mere biological cycles of eating and sleeping, devoid of any higher consciousness. The individual has forgotten the sacred 'Shabd' (Divine Word) imparted by the True Guru, neglecting the only eternal companion who exists beyond the beginning and the end of time.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the golden days of opportunity have slipped away because the seeker failed to cultivate a deep, loving bond with the Guru. Now, lamenting the loss is futile; just as a farmer cannot recover his crops once the birds have devoured the entire field, one cannot reclaim lost spiritual time once the window of consciousness has closed.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that humanity is besieged by three types of suffering—physical, celestial, and spiritual—for which countless worldly remedies are sought. However, the most potent heat is the internal fire of the soul's ignorance and ego, which cannot be extinguished through material means, but only through the guidance of a true enlightened master.

Meaning: Kabir likens the human condition to the oxen of a merchant, wandering aimlessly through various lands. Though they carry a precious cargo of sugar on their backs, they continue to eat dry fodder, oblivious to the sweetness they carry, simply because they lack the guidance of a true spiritual teacher.
