Meaning: Kabir asserts that the ignorant person fails to recognize and heed the call of the ultimate truth. He suggests that those who merely pretend to be ascetics often harbor hidden knots of attachment, while those consumed by worldly desires and lust remain trapped, unable to cross the turbulent ocean of existence.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the one who claims to be a scholar or a knower, yet remains a slave to their sensory desires, is effectively asleep in a spiritual slumber. Devoid of doubt, such a person unconsciously consumes the poison of worldly attachments, mistaking it for nectar.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the so-called scholar who has lost sight of the 'root'—the essence of primordial love and self-realization—is utterly bankrupt despite his intellectual accumulation. In contrast, the simple worldly person is superior if they harbor a sense of awe or fear of the Divine, for this humility prevents the catastrophic blindness of spiritual pride.

Meaning: In this couplet, Kabir asserts that the individual soul is so deeply entangled in its own desires and the illusions of the material world that the 'Alakh' (the Invisible Divine) remains unseen. Though the seeker attempts to find Govind (the Lord), the clarity of vision is missing, leaving behind only the exhaustion of a perpetual, misguided search.

Meaning: Kabir explains that he spent his entire life, day and night, wandering the world in an attempt to satisfy the hunger of the stomach and the demands of physical survival. However, he realizes that as long as the 'sense of lordship' or the ego of being a master resided in his mind, not a single endeavor—spiritual or material—reached its true fulfillment. The ego was the invisible wall blocking his success.

Meaning: Kabir presents a profound paradox regarding mastery and servitude. He suggests that he who considers himself a master or a lord is actually enslaved by ego and attachment, whereas he who accepts the state of a servant—surrendering the ego—finds true liberation. He likens the ignorant person to a herdsman who keeps his cattle bound; though the cattle graze on the cotton fields (the material world), they are tethered. Similarly, the human soul, blinded by the illusion of ownership and status, remains bound by the ropes of Maya, grazing on the superficialities of existence while missing the infinite freedom of the spirit.

Meaning: Kabir observes that a master became a statue, remaining a wooden figure for fifty years. Though he was carved in the name of 'Ram', he remained a mere piece of wood, waiting for disciples to come. This highlights the tragedy of a spiritual form that possesses the outward appearance of holiness but lacks the living, breathing essence of realization.

Meaning: Kabir observes that humans spend their lives carrying the heavy vessels of outward ritualism and social pretension. They remain oblivious to the true essence of the Divine Name (Ram), mistakenly equating spiritual worth with the superficial glitter of brass—symbolizing the attraction to external forms over internal realization.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the presiding deity of the Kali Yuga is greed. Just as brass is polished to mimic the luster of gold, the greedy individual adorns themselves with superficiality and pretense. They wander through the corridors of power and prestige, masquerading in vibrant colors to hide their inner void, mistaking external validation for spiritual worth.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the presiding deity of the Kali Yuga is greed, which has amplified the desires of the human mind. Man spends his existence chasing material gains, akin to borrowing money on high interest; he becomes so entangled in the ledger of worldly accounts and acquisitions that he forgets the ultimate spiritual debt, losing his inner peace in the pursuit of transient wealth.
