Meaning: Kabir speaks of the soul as a longing bride who can no longer endure the agony of separation. She pleads with the Divine to finally reveal His true self, for the relentless burning of longing throughout the day and night has become unbearable.

Meaning: Kabir questions the seeker: if you claim to be a longing soul separated from the Divine, why have you not been completely consumed by the fire of longing? You remain trapped in the delusions of the ego and worldly attachments, rendering your love superficial and failing to honor the true, sacrificial nature of spiritual devotion.

Meaning: Kabir declares himself to be like a piece of dry wood fueled by the agony of separation. He consciously stokes the fire of longing, desiring to be completely consumed by this spiritual yearning. His goal is total annihilation in the flames of separation, for only by burning away the separate self can he finally merge with the Divine Beloved.

Meaning: Kabir proclaims that his body and mind have been incinerated by the fire of separation from the Divine. He suggests that just as a corpse no longer feels physical pain, only one whose ego has been completely annihilated can truly comprehend the intensity and the liberating nature of this spiritual longing.

Meaning: This couplet describes the intense fire of separation (Viraha) that consumes the soul due to its estrangement from the Divine. Kabir expresses that he is burning in this longing, and it is this very burning that drives him toward Hari (the Formless Divine). He observes a paradox where even the 'water' (symbolizing peace or the worldly elements) seems to be ablaze with this spiritual yearning, questioning where the saints can find the means to extinguish such a cosmic fire.

Meaning: Kabir laments that he wandered through the mountains and forests of this material world, weeping and exhausting his sight in the search. He expresses the profound grief of failing to find that rare, spiritual herb—the divine knowledge—which alone can grant true life and liberation to the soul.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that if attaining the Divine requires wearing tattered rags or donning the finest silks, he is willing to do both. If the Divine is found within any specific outward appearance or attire, he is prepared to adopt that form, for his sole purpose is the union with the Eternal Truth.

Meaning: Kabir laments that his eyes have been scorched by the fire of separation, shedding tears every fleeting moment in longing for the Divine. The core of his agony lies in a spiritual stalemate: he has not yet attained union with the Beloved, nor can he find solace or contentment within his own existence, leaving him in a state of profound, restless yearning.

Meaning: Kabir describes a harrowing paradox: he is adrift in the vast ocean of worldly existence (Bhavsagar), clinging to a support that turns out to be a venomous serpent. If he lets go of the serpent, he will drown in the depths of the ocean; if he continues to hold onto it, the serpent will bite his arm. This symbolizes the agonizing trap of worldly attachment and the illusion of security.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the long, agonizing night of separation is nearing its end. He urges the seeker to remain steady and not succumb to despair, for time is relentless. Just as the passing of the night's watches inevitably leads to the dawn, the darkness of spiritual ignorance will soon be dispelled by the rising sun of divine realization.
