Meaning: Kabir suggests that humanity has failed in the ultimate trade of existence. We have spent our lives meticulously gathering 'counterfeit' goods—worldly attachments, ego, and superficial rituals—while completely ignoring and failing to value the 'pure gold' of spiritual awakening and the eternal truth of the soul.

Meaning: Kabir proclaims that once you have attained the priceless treasure of 'Ram'—the divine consciousness—tie it securely within the knot of your heart and never let it go. This spiritual wealth is unlike worldly riches; it cannot be traded in a marketplace, for there is no appraiser to value it, no customer to buy it, and no earthly price that can encompass its infinite worth.

Meaning: Kabir proclaims that the most precious treasure for liberation, the jewel of 'Ram' (the Divine Name), is an open mine residing within the vessel of one's own heart. This spiritual wealth is infinite and freely available to all, yet the tragedy remains that there is no one to collect or receive it, as humanity continues to seek the divine in external rituals and distant lands.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that where there is an attempt to grasp or possess through the ego, the Divine is absent; and where the Divine resides, the 'grasper' or the individual ego ceases to exist. Without true self-realization, a person wanders in confusion, but by seizing the 'Shabd' (the Eternal Word/Sound), one attains spiritual blossoming.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that those consumed by outward pretension and the ego remain strangers to the true identity of the Divine, drifting further away from reality. Conversely, the one with a simple heart, whose soul is ignited by the fire of longing, finds the Formless Eternal eternally present within their own being.

Meaning: Kabir observes that humans, blinded by ignorance, discard the sweetness of divine truth and spiritual bliss (sugar) only to meticulously collect and consume the worthless pebbles of worldly attachments. In this pursuit, they lose the priceless jewel of the soul amidst the shifting sands of illusion, leading to inevitable regret at the journey's end.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the pearls of divine truth are scattered everywhere, yet due to human ignorance, only a few are ever recovered. Without the illuminating light of the Lord, the entire world remains a chaotic wasteland of illusions and futile pursuits.

Meaning: Kabir describes the ignorant human as a blind cow whose calf has died, yet she continues to lick the dead hide out of blind affection. This serves as a poignant metaphor for the futile and delusional attachment humans maintain toward a transient and dead material world.

Meaning: In this couplet, Kabir asserts that just as a priceless ruby remains hidden in the depths of the ocean, unseen and unrecognized by the world, the Divine resides within every human being. This internal treasure can only be perceived and realized by one who has been graced by the profound guidance and wisdom of a true spiritual master.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the utterances of an ignorant person are mere noise, akin to the aimless barking of a dog. Just as a merchant in the depths of a pitch-black night cannot distinguish the subtle movements of a thief, a soul blinded by ignorance remains oblivious to the presence of the Divine Truth within.
