कबीर के दोहे (Kabir's Couplets)

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि यदि एक जहरीला सांप चंदन के पेड़ पर निवास करता है, तो वह अपनी प्रकृति के कारण चंदन की सुगंध या उसकी शीतलता को नष्ट नहीं कर सकता। चंदन अपनी पवित्रता बनाए रखता है। लेकिन यदि मनुष्य का अपना पूरा अस्तित्व अहंकार, क्रोध और ईर्ष्या जैसे विषों से भरा हुआ है, तो उसमें ईश्वरीय अमृत या आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान का वास कैसे संभव है?

Meaning: Kabir explains that even if a venomous serpent dwells within a sandalwood tree, the snake's poison cannot taint the inherent fragrance or purity of the wood. However, he warns that if a human being's entire existence is saturated with the poisons of ego, anger, and greed, there is no space left for the divine nectar of spiritual realization to reside.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि एक सच्चे साधु या आत्मज्ञानी व्यक्ति का साथ कभी व्यर्थ नहीं जाता। जिस प्रकार भूमि में बोया गया बीज निश्चित रूप से अंकुरित होकर फल और फूल देता है, उसी प्रकार सत्संग का प्रभाव व्यक्ति के जीवन में आध्यात्मिक समृद्धि और संतोष के रूप में अवश्य प्रकट होता है।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the company of a true seeker or an enlightened soul is never fruitless. Just as a seed sown in fertile earth inevitably sprouts into abundant flowers and fruits, the influence of spiritual association (Satsang) invariably manifests as spiritual growth and inner fulfillment in one's life.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि बुरी संगति से सदैव बचना चाहिए, क्योंकि जिस प्रकार पत्थर कभी पानी में तैर नहीं सकता, वैसे ही कुसंगति मनुष्य के चरित्र को भारी और जड़ बना देती है। एक ही बूंद जब बादल से गिरती है, तो वह जीवन देती है, लेकिन वही बूंद यदि सीप में गिरे तो मोती बन जाती है और यदि सांप के मुख में गिरे तो विष बन जाती है। संगति ही परिणाम तय करती है।

Meaning: Kabir warns against the perils of bad company, asserting that just as a stone cannot float on water, a soul immersed in negative company becomes spiritually heavy and stagnant. He illustrates this with a profound metaphor: a single drop of water, depending on where it lands, can become a life-giving rain, a precious pearl within an oyster, or a lethal poison in the mouth of a serpent. The environment determines the essence.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि यदि कोई वास्तव में एक सच्चे साधु या आत्म-ज्ञानी की संगति के प्रभाव को समझ ले, तो वह देख पाएगा कि कैसे चंदन के संपर्क में रहने से आस-पास की वस्तुएं सुगंधित हो जाती हैं। हालांकि, यह भी सत्य है कि बांस का स्वभाव ऐसा है कि वह चंदन के साथ रहकर भी स्वयं चंदन नहीं बन सकता, वह केवल उसकी सुगंध को धारण कर सकता है।

Meaning: Kabir explains that if one truly understands the power of associating with a realized soul (Sadhu), they realize that everything surrounding sandalwood becomes fragrant. However, he presents a paradox: while the surroundings absorb the scent, a bamboo reed, despite being in contact with sandalwood, can never actually transform into sandalwood itself; it only carries the fragrance.

अर्थ: जिस घर में सद्गुरु के प्रति समर्पण और भक्ति का अभाव है, और जहाँ संतों या आध्यात्मिक जिज्ञासुओं का सत्कार नहीं होता, वह घर वास्तव में एक जीवित श्मशान के समान है। वहाँ यमराज का वास होता है क्योंकि वहाँ चेतना मृत है।

Meaning: In a household where there is no devotion to the True Guru and no hospitality toward saints or seekers, that home is akin to a living cremation ground. It is said that Yama, the lord of death, resides there, for though the inhabitants are physically alive, their spiritual consciousness is dead.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि यदि कोई व्यक्ति पर्वत की ऊंची चोटी से गिर जाए, तो भी वह धरती पर गिरकर बच सकता है। लेकिन यदि कोई मूर्ख व्यक्ति के साथ मित्रता करता है, तो वह ऐसी काली और गहरी जलधारा में डूब जाता है जहाँ से निकलना असंभव है। यह दोहा अज्ञानी और अहंकारी लोगों के साथ गहरे संबंधों के खतरों के प्रति सचेत करता है।

Meaning: Kabir suggests that falling from the highest peak of a mountain may only result in landing on the earth, which is a survivable physical fall. However, befriending a fool is akin to drowning in a dark, relentless current of a river. The literal message warns that the spiritual and mental devastation caused by the company of the ignorant is far more lethal than any physical accident.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि केवल एक उच्च या प्रतिष्ठित कुल में जन्म लेने से कोई व्यक्ति महान नहीं बन जाता, यदि उसके कर्म निम्न और अधम हैं। यह वैसा ही है जैसे सोने का एक सुंदर कलश हो, लेकिन उसके भीतर केवल नशीली शराब भरी हो, जो साधु-संतों की निंदा और अहंकार से पूर्ण है; बाहरी चमक आंतरिक गंदगी को नहीं छुपा सकती।

Meaning: Kabir asserts that being born into a high or prestigious lineage does not grant a person greatness if their actions remain lowly and ignoble. He compares such a person to a golden pitcher filled with intoxicating wine; while the exterior is glittering and precious, the interior contains only intoxication and the habit of slandering the virtuous, proving that outward status cannot mask inner void.

अर्थ: कबीर दास जी कहते हैं कि समय का एक छोटा सा अंश, चाहे वह एक घड़ी हो, आधी घड़ी हो या उसका भी आधा हिस्सा, यदि किसी सच्चे संत या आत्म-ज्ञानी की संगत में व्यतीत किया जाए, तो वह व्यक्ति के करोड़ों जन्मों के पापों और मानसिक विकारों को नष्ट करने की क्षमता रखता है।

Meaning: Kabir explains that even a fleeting moment—a single watch, half a watch, or even a fraction of that—spent in the company of a true saint or an enlightened soul possesses the transformative power to erase millions of sins and dissolve the deep-seated karmic impurities of a human being.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि मनुष्य अत्यंत मूर्ख है जो सत्य के मार्ग पर चलने वाले संतों की संगति को त्याग देता है और सांसारिक वासनाओं तथा क्षणभंगुर सुखों के पीछे भागता है। यह वैसा ही है जैसे कोई व्यक्ति गंगा के पवित्र और अनंत जल को छोड़कर कुएं या गड्ढे के गंदे और सीमित पानी से अपनी प्यास बुझाने की कोशिश करे।

Meaning: Kabir observes that humans are profoundly foolish for abandoning the company of the enlightened and the virtuous to pursue sensory pleasures and worldly attachments. He likens this behavior to a mad person who ignores the vast, purifying waters of the holy Ganges to satisfy their thirst from a stagnant, muddy well or a small pit.

अर्थ: कबीर कहते हैं कि जब हम सांसारिक चर्चा करते हैं तो उसमें कई लोग शामिल होते हैं, जब हम ज्ञान की खोज करते हैं तो वह साधक और गुरु के बीच का द्वैत बन जाता है, लेकिन जब हम वास्तविक ध्यान में उतरते हैं, तब केवल एक ही शेष रहता है—परमात्मा, और वहां कोई दूसरा नहीं बचता।

Meaning: Kabir explains that worldly discourse involves a multitude of people, the pursuit of knowledge involves a duality between the seeker and the teacher, but in the state of true meditation, all distinctions vanish, leaving only the One—the Absolute—where no second entity exists.
