Meaning: Kabir suggests that one who is departing from this world or leaving your life should be allowed to go without clinging. Life is likened to a boatman's vessel where passengers are transient. The state in which they depart is their own destiny, and in the vast flow of existence, countless others will arrive and depart in a similar cycle.

Meaning: Kabir declares that he has reached a state where his heart is completely entwined with the Divine. Having grasped the vessel of spiritual nectar (immortality) in his own hands, he asks rhetorically why one should fear death, for the essence of eternal life has already been attained.

Meaning: This couplet describes a spiritual state where the soul is profoundly wounded by illusion (Maya) and ignorance. The seeker wanders through existence, but the internal agony is so pervasive that no external shield or pretense can conceal it. When the wound strikes the very core of being (the 'maram'), worldly remedies and superficial efforts fail to provide healing or survival.

Meaning: Kabir states that he acquired the lamp and the oil together. When these three elements—the lamp, the wick, and the oil—converged, a brilliant light was born. Drawn by this irresistible radiance, the moths flew into the flame and were consumed. This symbolizes the necessary preparation and the eventual surrender of the ego to the divine light.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one who clings to external rituals and ego is like an empty pot—hollow and devoid of essence. Such a person wanders in spiritual thirst, crying out for salvation while remaining blind to the internal truth. Ultimately, death is inevitable for all; whether it arrives today or tomorrow, the one without self-realization remains trapped in the cycle of suffering.

Meaning: Kabir observes that we witness the world passing away, and in turn, the world witnesses our own departure. In that final moment of transition, there is no earthly bond, no hand, and no mortal entity capable of holding us back or liberating us from the inevitable grip of death.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that a true devotee undergoes a daily spiritual death—the dissolution of the ego—to align with the Divine, while the ignorant remain trapped in the illusion of worldly dominance. The unaware person perceives life merely as a struggle for physical sustenance and sensory gratification, failing to realize that filling the stomach does not satisfy the hunger of the soul.

Meaning: Kabir observes that when drums, kettledrums, oboes, and trumpets sound, they signal a definitive departure or a grand celebration. Similarly, the true saint, the chaste soul, and the brave warrior, once they depart from this transient world, do not return to the cycle of rebirth, for they have achieved a state of spiritual completion and absolute integrity.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the inherent value of the soul, likened to a diamond, never diminishes, regardless of the ignorance of the one attempting to sell it. He who trades his inner divinity for fleeting material pleasures or worldly attachments has squandered the precious gift of human birth, living in a state of spiritual blindness akin to a mindless animal.

Meaning: Kabir observes that when the hour of death arrives, even if a person is surrounded by powerful warriors and loved ones who cry out in desperation, the formidable force of Time (Death) is so overwhelming that it snatches the soul away from the very center of its secure fortress.
