Kabir begins his teaching by turning the mirror on the reader. Sant Kabir Das demanded that his listeners examine their own hearts before judging anyone else, and his dohas on self-introspection make this inner examination the daily work of the seeker.
Kabir's method is unsparing and practical: watch your own anger before condemning another's, count your own greed before accusing the rich, and remember that the beam in your own eye hides the speck in your neighbour's. The dohas here are a mirror that shows the reader not as they appear but as they are.
Read these couplets to understand why Kabir placed honest self-knowledge at the beginning of the spiritual journey.
