(Self Discipline) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir suggests that true spiritual attainment occurs when the body is still and the mind is equally quieted. When both the physical form and the mental faculty are brought under conscious control and aligned at a single point of focus, the seeker experiences a spiritual ascent as stable and magnificent as Mount Sumeru, reaching a state of absolute wholeness.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the human mind is like a wild, uncontrollable elephant—powerful yet erratic. To master it, one must employ the 'aankus' (goad) of conscious awareness and discipline. Only by discarding the poisonous vines of worldly desires and ego can one finally taste the nectar of spiritual liberation and eternal bliss.

Meaning: Kabir urges the seeker to subdue the restless and egoistic mind, confining its wandering nature within the sanctuary of the heart. Just as a mahout uses an ankush (goad) to control a wild elephant, one must employ the tool of spiritual discipline and discernment to redirect the mind's outward cravings toward inner realization and stillness.

Meaning: The human mind possesses countless colors, shifting its moods, desires, and perceptions from one moment to the next. Very few rare souls are capable of remaining anchored in a single, unchanging color—the singular truth of the Divine or the steady state of pure consciousness.

Meaning: Kabir advises against blindly following the whims and fluctuating desires of the mind, as the mind harbors countless contradictory impulses. A true seeker or realized soul is one who has mastered the mind, riding it like a skilled equestrian rather than being driven by its erratic urges.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the mind is neither subservient to the five senses nor are the senses under its disciplined control. It behaves like a wild fire; wherever the mind's attention wanders, it ignites a trail of desire and unrest, leaving the seeker in a state of perpetual mental agitation and suffering.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that one who remembers the Guru with profound mindfulness and preserves absolute truth within the heart gains mastery over the five senses. Such an individual remains untouched by the fires of worldly suffering, mental turmoil, or external adversities.

Meaning: Kabir reflects on the struggle to conquer the mind, noting that despite repeated attempts, the five senses continue to dominate. He asserts that without the cultivation of modesty, truthfulness, and unwavering faith, the senses remain unrestrained, keeping the seeker trapped in a cycle of desire and distraction, far from the realization of the Divine.

Meaning: Kabir suggests that one should possess a discernment (Buddhi) so refined that it allows a person to navigate the complexities of life with grace. By knowing when to engage and when to withdraw, and by acting with selfless wisdom, one avoids unnecessary conflict and removes the burden of spiritual and worldly calamities from their head.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that anger is like a glowing ember, ego is the leaping flame, and the act of criticizing others is the choking smoke emanating from that fire. He declares that only the individual who successfully renounces all three of these destructive forces—anger, pride, and condemnation—can truly be recognized as a 'Sadhu' or an enlightened soul.
