(Mental Clarity) — Kabir Dohas

Meaning: Kabir explains that the mind is like a restless stick, constantly racing in outward directions, searching for peace and fulfillment in the external world. However, once the mind exhausts itself and becomes still, it realizes that the Truth it was seeking externally has always been present within its own center.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the joys and sorrows we experience in the external world are actually the manifestations of the commands issued by our own mind. When a specific mental state or desire arises within, it projects itself outward, shaping our external reality and emotional response.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that the human mind is inherently restless, acting as a thief that steals one's awareness and a master deceiver that lures the soul into illusion. Even celestial beings, humans, and enlightened sages struggle with this internal chaos, for the mind possesses countless gateways through which endless desires and distractions flow, trapping the seeker in a cycle of mental noise.

Meaning: Kabir suggests that what is forgotten is gone, but now is the time to awaken and regain consciousness. We must sever the bonds of bewilderment and oblivion with the knife of wisdom and sift through or erase our doubts like sand, allowing the pure truth to emerge clearly.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that as long as a human remains enslaved to the flickering desires of the mind, they wander through the three realms like a restless locust. Without the realization of the Formless Divine (Hari), the soul remains lost in a cycle of confusion, eventually falling prey to the inevitable grip of Time and Death.

Meaning: The human tongue is restless and unstable, constantly uttering falsehoods or harsh words. Driven by this erratic speech, the mind wanders in confusion and illusion, inadvertently swinging itself toward the inevitable grip of time and spiritual decay.

Meaning: This couplet illustrates the conflict between the restless mind and the inner consciousness. The mind urges a journey toward external destinations in search of truth, while the soul questions the need for such travel, revealing that the ultimate destination is incredibly close—residing within oneself. We wander for months or years, unaware that the village of peace is only half a mile away.

Meaning: Kabir asserts that within the human heart lies a mirror (aarasi) through which one can behold their true essence, yet it remains unseen. As long as the heart is clouded by duality, doubt, and mental turmoil, the actual face of the soul remains hidden. Only when the internal conflict ceases and clarity descends can the true self be witnessed.

Meaning: Kabir proclaims that when the soul is severed from its divine source, peace vanishes from every dimension of existence. There is no joy in the waking hours, no tranquility in the depths of the night, and no solace even within the realm of dreams. This separation from the Eternal creates a void where neither the warmth of the sun nor the coolness of the shade can provide relief; only an endless, aching incompleteness remains.

Meaning: Kabir expresses a profound, enduring longing for the Divine. He states that he has waited for an eternity for the arrival of the Beloved (Ram), and his soul yearns with an intense thirst for union, leaving the mind in a state of perpetual restlessness until that spiritual merger occurs.
