Kabir garv na kariye, is joban ki aas. Tesu phoola divas das, khankhar bhaya palas.

यह दोहा यौवन की नश्वरता (Transience of Youth) विषय से जुड़ा है — Kabir doha meaning and explanation in Hindi and English.

(Meaning):

Kabir warns against harboring pride in one's youth and physical beauty. Just as the Tesu flower blooms for a mere ten days before the Palash tree turns dry and lifeless, the vigor and allure of human youth are fleeting and destined to fade.

(Interpretation):

This couplet addresses the annihilation of ego through the lens of physical impermanence. Literally, it is a warning about aging, but spiritually, it exposes the illusion of 'Maya'. Here, 'Joban' (youth) symbolizes not just physical beauty, but any worldly achievement we mistakenly perceive as permanent. Through Nirgun Bhakti, Kabir explains that as long as we are attached to the external form, we remain distant from the Truth. This reinforces the Advaita Vedanta principle where the body is viewed merely as a garment and the Atman as eternal. The central paradox lies in the human tendency to take pride in that which is beyond their control and destined to dissolve in the current of time.

(Philosophical Analysis):

Kabir's message strikes at the social structures of his era, where external appearances and caste superiority were highly valued. He opposed ritualism because he recognized that outward displays only nourish the ego.

Philosophically, this doha aligns with the Sufi concept of 'Fana' (the annihilation of the self). When an individual realizes that their physical existence is like a bubble, they begin the journey toward the True Divine or 'Paramatma'.

According to Advaita Vedanta, the 'Ahamkara' (ego) is the veil that separates the individual soul from Brahman. Kabir attempts to tear this veil, illustrating that beauty and power are merely temporary coverings.

On a psychological level, this is a warning against 'Moha' (attachment). When we tether our identity to our body or status, we fall into a cycle of fear and insecurity.

Ultimately, Kabir's intent is not to induce despair, but to lead the seeker toward that eternal bliss which transcends time and death. It is an essential transition from the material to the spiritual.

(Core Message):

  • Physical beauty is a fleeting illusion.
  • Ego is the greatest obstacle on the path to Truth.
  • Accepting impermanence is the key to true freedom.
  • The beauty of the soul transcends the limits of time.
  • Renouncing the external form awakens the internal truth.

(Practical Example):

Once, on the ghats of Varanasi, lived a highly skilled and handsome sculptor named Madhav. His art and his youth were the talk of the town. Madhav was immensely proud of his beauty and vigor, often looking down upon other artisans, believing his charm would keep him superior forever.

He carved only external beauty into his sculptures, believing the world only values what is visible. He never sought inner peace or humility, intoxicated by the pride of his youth, thinking time had paused for him.

As years passed, a difficult phase arrived. A severe illness gripped his body, and his glowing skin turned into wrinkles. His hands began to tremble, and he could no longer create the intricate sculptures of his youth.

The townspeople, who once praised his beauty, began to ignore him. Those who once flattered him now mocked his frailty. Madhav sank into a deep depression, feeling he had lost everything.

One day, while sitting on the steps of an old temple, he heard Kabir's doha. He realized that the 'beauty' he took pride in was actually a borrowed object, which time had now reclaimed.

He understood that he had spent his life like the 'Tesu flower' that blooms for only a few days. He had mistaken his external appearance for his identity, while the beauty of his soul remained untouched.

This realization triggered a revolution within Madhav. He stopped focusing on external perfection and began carving 'emotion' and 'compassion' into his art. He accepted his physical limitations and turned them into a medium for spiritual growth.

He began teaching people through his art that true beauty lies in the purity of the soul, not in the structure of the body. His ego vanished completely, and he became a truly great artist.

Madhav's life was now filled with peace and contentment. He knew that the body would shed like the dry leaves of the Palash, but the love and truth he gave others were eternal.

This new vision led him toward the liberation that he had been unable to see during the blind arrogance of his youth.

(Practice Guidance):

  • Practice 15 minutes of silent meditation daily, viewing your body as a mere vehicle rather than your identity.
  • Maintain a journal listing three things you are proud of, then contemplate their value twenty years from now.
  • Behavioral Change: Serve someone whom society deems 'unattractive' or 'incapable' to train yourself to see beyond the physical form.
  • Diagnostic Checklist: Do you feel an ego boost upon receiving compliments? Do you fear the thought of aging? If yes, your ego is still dominant.

(Reflection Questions):

  • If your physical attraction vanished today, what would remain of your personality?
  • How much time do you spend grooming your digital identity, and how far does it diverge from your true self?
  • Is your pride based on your own achievements, or on the praises others bestow upon you?
  • What mental shields do you use to avoid the thought of aging and death?
  • Do you truly see others for their virtues, or only through their external veneer?
