यह दोहा निर्गुण ब्रह्म (Nirguna Brahman) विषय से जुड़ा है — Kabir doha meaning and explanation in Hindi and English.

(Meaning):

Kabir asserts that between the imagined realms of heaven and hell, humanity is trapped between two conflicting poles of perception. Even the six classical schools of philosophy and countless realized beings remain entangled in doubt, while the cycle of eighty-four thousand species continues due to this fundamental ignorance of the Self.

(Interpretation):

Literally, Kabir speaks of the distance between heaven and hell and the beings trapped therein. Metaphorically, 'heaven and hell' represent the psychological extremes of egoic inflation and profound depression. 'Dui tambirya' refers to the state of duality, where the human mind oscillates between opposites: right and wrong, pleasure and pain, 'I' and 'Thou'. This duality is the essence of Maya. As long as a seeker remains entangled in the intellectual debates of the 'Shat Darshan' (six philosophies), they only cultivate more doubt. Liberation occurs when one transcends these external categories to merge with the Nirgun Brahman, where neither heaven nor hell exists, only pure, non-dual consciousness.

(Philosophical Analysis):

This couplet is a sharp critique of the medieval Indian religious atmosphere, where people were immersed in rituals and complex philosophical debates to achieve salvation. Kabir highlights the limitations of the 'Shat Darshan' (the six classical schools of Indian philosophy). He argues that intellectual analysis is not the path to truth but rather an obstacle. This perspective aligns with Advaita Vedanta, which posits that knowledge (Jnana) is effective only when it annihilates the ego, not when it becomes a subject of scholarly debate.

Influenced by Sufism, Kabir speaks of 'Fana'—the complete annihilation of the self. As long as a human perceives themselves as a separate entity, they remain trapped in the cycle of eighty-four thousand species (Samsara). For Kabir, religion is not an external identity but an internal experience. He rejects ritualism because it binds the human to external symbols and distances them from the 'Ram' or 'Shunya' (Void) residing within.

On a psychological level, this doha illustrates cognitive dissonance. We seek truth, but our search is limited by our prejudices and preconceived notions. Kabir suggests that truth is not found within a philosophy, but at the end of all philosophies.

The primary objective of this teaching is the destruction of 'Avidya' (ignorance). When the seeker realizes that heaven and hell are merely mental projections, they are liberated from duality and enter a state of natural spontaneity (Sahaja).

Ultimately, Kabir clarifies that even the 'Siddhas' (perfected ones) remain confused if they chase supernatural powers (siddhis). Real perfection lies only in knowing that one Truth which transcends words and scriptures.

(Core Message):

  • Heaven and hell are merely illusions created by the mind.
  • Intellectual debate creates obstacles in realizing the truth.
  • Renouncing duality is the only path to genuine peace.
  • Truth resides in personal experience, not in scriptures.
  • The dissolution of ego is the liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

(Practical Example):

Once, in the ghats of Varanasi, lived an elderly weaver named Madhav. Madhav spent his entire life in fear that a single mistake would cast him into the fires of hell, while excessive charity would grant him a place in heaven. He lived in a constant state of duality, wondering if his life was moving in the right direction.

Madhav consulted many pundits, read numerous scriptures, and bowed before various saints. Yet, the doubt in his mind never vanished. He was perpetually troubled by the question of which philosophy was correct—whether the soul was separate from the body or a part of it.

One day, Madhav saw a dervish sitting silently by the river. Madhav asked him, "Master, tell me the path to heaven and hell. Which philosophy should I follow to attain liberation?"

The dervish smiled and pointed to a piece of cloth in Madhav's hand. He asked, "Look at this cloth. Is it blue or white?"

Madhav replied, "It is blue."

The dervish then asked, "If I say it is not blue but the color of the deep ocean, would you argue? Or if I say it is merely a collection of threads, would you deny it?"

Madhav remained silent. The dervish continued, "You are trapped in the debate of heaven and hell just as you could be trapped in a debate over the color of this cloth. You are searching for truth in words, while truth exists in the experience that begins where words end."

At that moment, Madhav felt a profound shock. He realized that his entire life had been spent in a mental war between 'right' and 'wrong', while peace existed only in the present moment.

From that day on, Madhav did not stop reading texts, but he stopped treating them as the 'ultimate truth'. He turned his daily work into his worship.

He no longer craved heaven nor feared hell. He simply began to live in the now, and the duality of his existence vanished.

(Practice Guidance):

  • Daily Meditation: Sit in silence for 20 minutes daily. Whenever a thought of 'right' or 'wrong' arises, observe it merely as a thought without passing judgment.
  • Self-Inquiry Journal: Write down which two opposing ideas in your life (e.g., success vs. failure) are causing mental stress. Contemplate whether both are actually true or merely perceptions.
  • Behavioral Shift: Once a day, encounter a situation where, instead of imposing your opinion, you accept another's perspective without any judgment.
  • Diagnostic Checklist: Are you still linking your happiness to a future reward (heaven) or punishment (hell)? Are you seeking truth only in books? If yes, you are still trapped in duality.

(Reflection Questions):

  • What is your personal definition of 'heaven', and is it truly peace or merely a social achievement?
  • Between which two opposing identities are you struggling—the one the world sees and the one you truly are?
  • If you had no religious texts or gurus, would you still be able to feel the truth?
  • How is your 'digital ego' (social media image) creating new illusions of heaven and hell for you?
  • Do you truly desire to know the truth, or do you merely seek confirmation of your existing beliefs?
