यह दोहा कर्म (Karma) विषय से जुड़ा है — Kabir doha meaning and explanation in Hindi and English.

(Meaning):

One who persists in performing evil deeds yet desires happiness is living in a delusion. Just as planting a thorny acacia tree cannot possibly yield the sweet fruits of a mango, sowing seeds of malice and negativity cannot result in the harvest of true peace and joy.

(Interpretation):

This couplet underscores the immutable law of Karma and the principle of causality. On a literal level, it addresses the direct relationship between action and result. Metaphorically, the 'acacia' (Babool) symbolizes ego, anger, and malice, while the 'mango' represents spiritual peace and liberation. Kabir explains that happiness is not a product of external circumstances but a result of internal purification. As long as the consciousness is clouded by vices, the experience of bliss remains impossible. This aligns with the Advaita Vedanta concept where Maya (illusion) deceives the individual into believing that a distorted path can lead to a divine destination. Ultimately, the verse calls for a shift in consciousness, urging the seeker to align their actions with the truth of the Atman to realize the non-dual nature of existence.

(Philosophical Analysis):

Kabir's insight serves as a profound critique of the social and religious hypocrisy of his era. He observed people clinging to external rituals while their internal conduct remained stagnant and toxic. He argues that visiting temples or chanting beads is futile if the heart is inhabited by jealousy and hatred. This perspective mirrors the Sufi concept of annihilating the 'Nafs' (the lower ego), where the purification of the soul is the only viable path to the Divine.

Philosophically, this couplet is rooted in the 'Seed-Fruit' principle. If the seed is corrupted, the resulting tree can never be fruitful. Here, 'evil' does not merely refer to social crimes but to the subtle presence of the ego. As long as an individual perceives themselves as separate from and superior to others, they are effectively planting the 'acacia' of separation.

According to Advaita Vedanta, Brahman is the only reality, and the world is Maya. When a human, swayed by Maya, chooses the path of selfishness and violence, they drift away from their primordial nature (Sat-Chit-Ananda). Kabir warns that the laws of nature apply equally to the spiritual realm; one cannot escape the cosmic justice of cause and effect.

This analysis further distinguishes between pleasure and bliss. Pleasure is often sensory and ephemeral, whereas Bliss (Ananda) is the inherent nature of the Atman. One walking the path of malice may find fleeting pleasure, but they can never attain permanent bliss because their foundation is unstable and poisonous.

Ultimately, Kabir's message is that transformation must begin from within. The refinement of action is the elevation of consciousness. When an individual adopts selfless love and compassion, they are truly sowing the 'mango' seeds, leading them toward the ultimate truth where duality vanishes and only the one universal consciousness remains.

(Core Message):

  • Expecting happiness from negative actions is a fundamental delusion.
  • Internal purification is the only authentic source of true bliss.
  • Ego and malice are the primary obstacles on the path to peace.
  • True transformation comes through conduct, not external rituals.
  • Cosmic justice is immutable; you harvest exactly what you sow.

(Practical Example):

In the ancient ghats of Varanasi lived an elderly boatman named Ramdeen. Ramdeen was naturally prone to anger and greed. He frequently belittled his fellow boatmen, overcharged tourists, and sabotaged the work of younger sailors. He believed this was 'shrewdness' and that it would bring him prosperity and respect in life.

After years of this behavior, Ramdeen noticed that his own children had distanced themselves from him, and other boatmen avoided his company. He possessed money, but his mind was plagued by deep restlessness and loneliness. He suffered from insomnia and lived in a state of constant tension.

One day, he encountered a monk who was profoundly serene. Despite possessing nothing, the monk wore a transcendental smile. Ramdeen asked, "I have everything, yet I am miserable. You have nothing, yet you are happy. Why is this?"

The monk smiled and recited Kabir's couplet: "Kare burai sukh chahay..." He explained that Ramdeen had spent his life planting only the thorns of the acacia—the thorns of anger, deceit, and ego. Now, he expected to harvest the sweet mangoes of peace and love, which was an impossibility.

These words pierced Ramdeen's heart. He realized that his 'shrewdness' was actually his destruction. He decided to transform his behavior. He began by seeking forgiveness from those he had wronged.

Initially, it was difficult. People did not trust him. However, Ramdeen remained patient. He began using his boat to ferry poor pilgrims for free. He started helping fellow boatmen, even those who continued to treat him poorly.

Slowly, the atmosphere at the ghat began to change. People started respecting him. His children, who had been estranged, began to return. Ramdeen realized that the peace he had been searching for arrived only after he changed his actions.

Ramdeen no longer had as much wealth as before, but he possessed the 'mango' he had truly sought—genuine love, inner peace, and self-contentment. He had learned that the fruits of life depend entirely on the seeds we sow.

(Practice Guidance):

  • Daily Self-Audit: Before sleeping, review your day's actions. Ask yourself, 'Did I sow acacia (pain) or mangoes (joy) for others today?'
  • Consciousness Practice: Whenever a thought of anger or jealousy arises, pause and recognize that this thought is sowing a seed of future suffering for yourself.
  • Act of Compassion: Perform at least one completely selfless act daily that benefits another, without any expectation of reward.
  • Diagnostic Checklist: If you find yourself facing recurring patterns of the same problems (relationship stress, mental unrest), examine whether there is a 'Babool' pattern in your behavior that you are subconsciously repeating.

(Reflection Questions):

  • What are the 'acacia trees' in my life that I am unconsciously nurturing?
  • Do I justify my mistakes with logic, hoping that the outcome will still be pleasant?
  • What is the gap between my public persona and my private conduct, and how does this gap affect me?
  • Do I expect love and respect from others that I do not offer to them myself?
  • If my life were a mirror, what would I see in it today—thorns or fruits?
