(Nirguna Brahman)

Tu mati jaane bawre, mera hai sab koy. Pran pind so bandhi raha, so nahin apna hoye.

यह दोहा निर्गुण ब्रह्म (Nirguna Brahman) विषय से जुड़ा है — Kabir doha meaning and explanation in Hindi and English.

(Meaning):

Kabir addresses the delusional human mind, warning against the fallacy of ownership. He asserts that the belief that people or things in this world belong to us is an illusion. The physical body and the life-force within it are merely temporary bonds; nothing tied to this transient physical existence is truly one's own.

(Interpretation):

Literally, the verse warns that worldly attachment is a form of madness. Kabir uses 'baaware' (fool/madman) to describe the soul blinded by Maya. 'Pind' refers to the physical vessel, and 'Praan' to the vital breath. Metaphorically, this aligns with Advaita Vedanta, where the Atman mistakenly identifies with the limited body. As long as we perceive ourselves through the lens of the physical form, we remain trapped in the duality of 'mine' and 'thine.' This attachment is the root of all suffering. The central paradox is that while we strive to possess the world, we are ourselves possessed by the illusion of ownership. True liberation occurs when one realizes that only the formless consciousness is eternal, and the body is merely a borrowed garment.

(Philosophical Analysis):

Kabir’s philosophy represents a profound synthesis of Nirgun Bhakti and Sufism. Writing during an era dominated by rigid ritualism and caste hierarchies, Kabir dismantled the notion that spiritual liberation could be achieved through external rites. In this verse, the concept of 'mine' serves as a symbol for the Ego (Ahankara). By claiming ownership over people or things, the individual reinforces a limited identity, creating a barrier between the self and the Infinite (Brahman).

From the perspective of Advaita Vedanta, the soul (Atman) is identical to the ultimate reality, yet it perceives separation due to Avidya (ignorance). Kabir attacks this ignorance by highlighting the transience of the 'Pind' (body) and 'Praan' (breath). He suggests that the biological existence is a temporary contract, not a permanent possession. Recognizing this impermanence is the first step toward enlightenment.

This mirrors the Sufi concept of 'Fana'—the annihilation of the self. Kabir posits that as long as the 'I' exists, the Divine cannot be realized. The paradox is that the more we cling to our identity and possessions, the more we alienate ourselves from our true essence.

Socially, this teaching is a radical tool for dismantling caste and class distinctions. If the physical body and its worldly associations are illusory, then the pride associated with birth or status is equally void. It is a psychological shift from the peripheral to the center, from the noise of the world to the silence of the void.

Ultimately, Kabir establishes that true ownership belongs only to the Formless One. The human being is merely a conduit. Internalizing this truth allows the seeker to transcend the cycle of birth and death by detaching from the false narrative of ownership.

(Core Message):

  • The illusion of ownership is the primary source of mental suffering.
  • The body and breath are temporary shelters, not the final destination.
  • The dissolution of the ego is the only gateway to the Divine.
  • True freedom lies in transcending the duality of 'mine' and 'thine.'
  • We are not the owners of this world, but merely transient travelers.

(Practical Example):

Once, in the ghats of Varanasi, lived an elderly weaver named Madhav. Madhav had spent his entire life crafting the finest silk garments. He viewed his exquisite collection of fabrics as his greatest achievement, often boasting, 'All of this is mine; it is the proof of my mastery.'

Madhav had a son whom he considered his most precious possession. He provided his son with every luxury and instilled in him the belief that he was the sole heir to Madhav's legacy. Madhav's entire identity was woven around his craft and his family.

One year, a catastrophic flood struck Varanasi, submerging the lower districts. Water rushed into Madhav's home. The silk garments he had spent years creating, his looms, and his accumulated wealth were all swept away by the current. Madhav frantically tried to save his fabrics, but the waves were relentless.

In the chaos, his son reached safety, but he could not comprehend his father's mental collapse. Madhav wailed, 'Everything I own is gone! Who am I now?'

During this crisis, he encountered a wandering mystic who calmed him and recited Kabir's doha. The mystic asked, 'Madhav, was that cloth truly yours, or was it merely a collection of threads that nature lent to you for a while? Is your son yours, or is he a free soul on his own journey?'

For the first time, Madhav realized that what he had called 'mine' was never actually his. He had been a mere custodian, not an owner.

This realization triggered a profound transformation. Madhav began weaving again, but he no longer viewed the garments as 'his property.' He started creating them as an act of service to the Divine and for the benefit of others.

His ego had shattered. He no longer tied his identity to his possessions or his son, but to the inner peace that came from accepting this truth.

He discovered that by relinquishing the word 'mine,' the entire universe became his, for he was no longer bound to any single object or person.

Madhav was no longer just a wealthy weaver; he had become a liberated soul, learning to flow with the currents of life without resistance.

(Practice Guidance):

  • Daily Contemplation: Spend 15 minutes in silence daily. List the things you call 'mine' and contemplate whether your core consciousness would be diminished if they vanished today.
  • Self-Inquiry Journaling: Document how the ego of ownership creates tension in your relationships. Ask yourself: 'Am I trying to control others simply because I perceive them as mine?'
  • Behavioral Shift: At least once a day, consciously transform a feeling of ownership into a feeling of gratitude. Instead of thinking 'This is mine,' say 'I have been gifted this for a while.'
  • Diagnostic Checklist: If the loss of a possession or a relationship triggers intense rage or despair, you are still bound by the illusion of 'Pind' and 'Maya.' If you can maintain equanimity during separation, you are living this wisdom.

(Reflection Questions):

  • If all your social identities—status, relationships, and assets—were stripped away, what would remain within you?
  • You call your loved ones 'yours,' but is this true love or merely a subtle desire for control?
  • In the digital age, how much of your online profile and image do you claim as 'mine,' and how does that disrupt your inner peace?
  • Are you truly free, or are you a slave to the things you claim to own?
  • At the moment of death, what meaning will the word 'mine' hold?
